The so-called "cause for establishing the past and future" relies on what is happening now. It is because the past and future are nominally established. That which will attain that state is the future. That which has already been attained is the past. The so-called "abiding by function" is because the eye and so on exist in the place of consciousness and so on. The occasion of speaking about the past and so on also shows this. Why did the Blessed One establish the three, such as the past, as the basis of discussion, and not Nirvana? Because Nirvana is something to be known by each individual, and it is inexpressible. This is a synonym for "inexpressible." Occurring, will occur, and the present are not the places for the names of seeing, hearing, distinguishing, and consciousness. The so-called "ten realms" are the realm of consciousness, and the realms of form, sound, and dharma. The so-called "four sources of birth" are the sources of birth of form, sound, mind, and dharma. The so-called "within those themselves" refers to faith and so on. The so-called "not naturally distinguished" refers to one's own and with, not by the power of virtuous friends and so on; this is a synonym. The so-called "desire universally exists" is not just the desire obtained by birth, but together with faith and so on. The so-called "cultivating virtue" means that everything arising from hearing and so on should be understood as virtuous dharmas. By upholding birth in heaven and wealthy families, these two show the cause of higher rebirth. By upholding that which accords with purification, it shows the cause of attaining Nirvana. The so-called "antidote of refutation" and so on will be explained below. What are those? Among them, the antidote of refutation is to view compounded things with outflows as faults, and therefore to refute the aggregates of grasping with aspects such as internal and fruit. The so-called "antidote of abandonment" is the path of application and the immediately following path, because they abandon afflictions. The antidote of the basis is the path of liberation.

Therefore, they universally hold onto the attainment of abandonment. The so-called "antidote of distancing" is the path of its higher position, for it distances the afflictions previously abandoned. The so-called "from afflictions other than that, and afflictions nearby, and all misconduct arises" means whatever is not self-born that engages in desire, and whatever misconduct arises from self-born, that is unwholesome. Other than that, it should be known as obscured and unspecified. Where harm is prioritized and sheep and buffalo, etc., are killed, and where evil views are prioritized and merit is desired, and for the sake of desiring excellence, where one relies on gods in those afflictions by not eating, etc. The so-called "throwing or perfecting" is under the power of bad destinies. In good destinies, it is perfecting itself, by which one experiences suffering such as poverty after being born here. The so-called "dharma that obstructs virtue" is gathering in the sangha without interruption, etc. The so-called "eighteen realms" are the realms of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, smell, taste, and touch. The so-called "eight sources" are those themselves. The so-called "mind that is neither hatred nor joy" shows the transformation from virtue and non-virtue. The so-called "completely seized by those themselves" is because it enters through remembering its appearance. The so-called "habitual patterns of those themselves being spoken" is for the sake of causing manifest speech to arise in the future through the collection of names, etc., imprinting habitual patterns on the mind. The so-called "whatever arises from the mind and mental factors completely seized by those" arises from the aspects of manifest speech such as names transformed into a mind that is neither hatred nor joy. The so-called "having a mind that is neither afflicted nor virtuous" means that if it is transformed into a mind that is neither afflicted nor virtuous, then actions such as walking will become unspecified. Otherwise, it will become virtuous or non-virtuous.
