It is also like that. It is not the nirvana without the residue of the aggregates, because it is the state of being alive. Or if nirvana is merely the non-arising of afflictions and birth, then non-arising is also non-existent, because non-existence is not seen as the basis of anything. Therefore, it should be admitted that what is included in the aggregate of formations and becomes the basis of the noble path is the alaya-consciousness. Taking the universal defilement of birth as the state of death and transference, it is said that doing good or doing evil at the time of death and transference, etc. Saying 'from the lower part or the upper part' indicates that at the time of death, the body of the person who does good gradually loses temperature from the soles of the feet, while the person who does evil gradually loses temperature from the crown of the head. Thus, if it is admitted that consciousness gradually abandons the body, then it should be examined which consciousness it is. For this, it is not the body consciousness, because before death, whichever limb does not give rise to body consciousness, that limb is completely abandoned by the body consciousness. If the sense faculties cease, it will become a loss of temperature. Similarly, eye consciousness etc. should also be explained. It is also not the mind consciousness, why? Because it does not depend on the body, but depends on the mind. The body also does not depend on it, because it is not its result. If one's own basis does not arise, or one's own result is not produced, it is said to be completely abandoned, then these two cannot exist simultaneously with mind consciousness and body. Or if one thinks that merely existing does not completely abandon, but non-existence completely abandons, that is also unreasonable, because until the last breath is cut off, mind consciousness always exists, therefore it will become a fault of not gradually abandoning the body. Then, what pervades the entire body, and later gradually shrinks or partially stops, only gradually abandons the part of the body that does not have its own limbs?

Nor is it with the changing limbs. Furthermore, since the consciousness of mind is always present, it is not possible to completely abandon or not completely abandon the body by its power. If it were not so, then in the state of unconscious sleep and so on, and in the state where other sense consciousnesses arise universally, it would follow that one would die, because it is not present. However, if one thinks that the senses gradually cease because the force of karma gradually diminishes, then that itself should be examined. Is it that the senses that consciousness has not made its own, remain for a while and then cease because their own power of karma is exhausted? Or is it that the senses that consciousness has made its own, remain for a while and then cease when consciousness completely abandons them because the power of karma is exhausted? If the first idea is the case, then that is not well-known, because even in the state of fainting and so on, even though the mind is acknowledged, the senses without consciousness, which are the basis of acceptance, are not known anywhere. It would also contradict the sutras such as "Life, warmth, and consciousness," because it is said therein that the senses do not remain because they are completely abandoned by consciousness. If it is the second idea, then it should be examined by which consciousness it is completely abandoned and ceases. It is not possible for the consciousnesses that enter in all ways. Furthermore, if there is the alaya consciousness, how does it work? All the senses depend on it. Therefore, whichever part of the senses has completely exhausted the force of karma, the sense of that place where the resultant consciousness becomes incompatible with birth ceases, and the warmth disappears. In this order, it is possible that the entire body loses warmth by completely abandoning all the senses. This is temporarily a way of acknowledging external objects. For the view that knowledge is internal, when the alaya consciousness arises appearing throughout the entire body, then the entire body is occupied. When some parts of the body appear as self and some parts appear as external, then the part that appears as self is occupied, and the external

Because one does not cling to the form of having (warmth), the warmth disappears. This has already been explained only in the context of clinging during the state of abiding. Since seeds do not exist merely through examining afflictions, etc., it is indirectly explained that afflictions and virtuous minds in the form realm are unreasonable. Furthermore, since it needs to be explained through the occasion of purification, how does one indicate worldly purification with words such as "worldly"? If one thinks that one has attained the near attainment because one has not separated from desire in the desire realm, then the phrase "not having attained the mind of the form realm" is mentioned. The so-called "virtue in the desire realm" refers to (virtue) arising from hearing and contemplation. The so-called "mind arising from application" refers to that which abides in the best and last stage of contemplation; with what as the immediately following result does the mind arising from application in the form realm arise? Now, it cannot serve as a seed for the mind of the form realm, because according to the manner explained, the seed cannot be fully grasped. If one thinks that the mind of the form realm, which has been familiar since beginningless samsara, is the seed, then the mind of the form realm is separated by many minds of the desire realm, and since it is merely past, it cannot serve as a seed. As for the aspect of the alaya-vijnana, the seed of the mind of the form realm, whether it abides by nature from beginningless samsara or arises, has come continuously without interruption, and having ripened, it is the cause of equal share in the form realm. It is the co-existent condition of the cause, and because it is able to fully nourish the seed arising from the application of the desire realm, and because it is of an uncontaminated nature, it is the dominant condition. Furthermore, why should one not say that the similar (mind) in the desire realm is also the immediately preceding condition? If one says that it is because it has just ceased, then one should not say that, because it is not pervasive. For example, that similar (mind) that has just ceased is the immediately preceding condition, and others are not. The dominant condition begins with effort.
