If it is said, 'Since I am not there, those things should not be called food either, should they?' It should not be said that way. If it is shown that entering consciousness is impossible, then those that have the same nature as it are also actually accomplished, so there is no need to state them separately. Therefore, it is unreasonable to remain without food in that state. To this, the Sutra School says that mental food is of two kinds: that which is associated with manifest consciousness, and that which is grasped by the fully matured result of the habit produced by the cause of maturation. In the state of no consciousness, the first consciousness is impossible. Then, why is the second impossible? This is because, apart from the alaya consciousness, the answer should be given by establishing the negation of what is to be taught. Furthermore, if the internal view holds that mind and mental factors do not exist, then in that particular state, the body also does not exist, so what will the power produced by karma rely on? Why not admit that in that state, the alaya consciousness is still able to provide help? Or, it should be considered in the state of having consciousness, because coarse food is the cause of growth, so the touch that has the same nature as the entering consciousness will experience pleasure. And the characteristic of mental food is to seek the desired object that appears, because it is the cause of benefiting the body, so by completely nourishing the matured fruit, it can also be considered as food. Then, what about the entering consciousness? If it is said, 'Because it can provide help,' then that is not the case, because apart from the touch that experiences pleasure and the mind of hope, it cannot provide help separately. Or, is it merely not hindering? If so, then the eyes and so on would also excessively become a small amount of food. Or, is it merely completely severing the object? If so, then the noble path would also excessively become food. Or, because it is compatible? Then, it should be examined how it is compatible. Therefore, the eyes and so on are together with the matured consciousness.

Having been thrown by a single karma, that is, having been accomplished together with it and having become one with bliss, and since it depends on that and abides, therefore the ālaya-vijñāna should be considered as food, and after having ascertained it in this way, it is said, "If there is no vipāka-vijñāna," and so on. If asked: Is it not redundant, since the meaning can be understood from this one statement alone that the ālaya-vijñāna is what holds the sense organs with form? Answer: It is not, because here in "food is fourfold," it is important to show that only the ālaya-vijñāna is considered as the food of consciousness. The pervasive affliction of birth is spoken of in terms of the connection of rebirth in the form realm, so it is said, "Having died and transmigrated from here," and so on. The so-called mind consciousness is because it is in accordance with that connection of rebirth. The so-called afflicted is the last mind of the intermediate existence. The so-called non-samāhita is that even the dhyāna that is endowed with being equal to enjoyment is also afflicted. Because it is similar to samāhita, it is distinguished. The so-called connection of rebirth continuum is the existence of birth. Among them, with "non-samāhita," etc., it is explained that the last mind of the intermediate existence is afflicted, and as mentioned before, if analyzed by affliction, then there should not be different seeds of entering consciousness. Although it has already been determined here that it is only in terms of the pervasive affliction of affliction, but because it is in accordance with the pervasive affliction of birth, it is also briefly mentioned here, and thus, all connections of rebirth in the existence of birth are preceded by an afflicted mind. If that is really the case, then all connections of rebirth that are practiced in the desire realm should also be said in this way, because the meaning can be understood only by showing the two doors. Just as here, because there is no seed, the afflicted mind is not reasonable, therefore the connection of rebirth in the existence of birth will disappear, similarly, it should be inferred there as well. Also, just as there, the two mind consciousnesses will arise simultaneously, similarly, it should be inferred here as well. Furthermore, its ground
