Since contaminated dharmas are similar to those that are in accordance with the divisions of discernment, do they necessarily have the seeds of afflictions? To refute this, it is said, "If they cease." Among these, although statements such as "constant non-indication" are not appropriate, they are stated in this way to be consistent with others. If someone thinks that it is only when the supreme cessation of worldly dharmas occurs that the seed is established in the first moment of the noble path, therefore, it is said, "Because of being liberated by nature." Some are liberated only by nature, namely, those minds of the no-more-learning that are without outflows. Some are both liberated by nature and liberated in continuity, namely, those minds of the no-more-learning that are without outflows. Both of these are not the basis for the seeds of afflictions, and because they are in accordance with objects and similar objects, afflictions will not increase, therefore they are liberated. Therefore, the minds of those with learning that are without outflows are not possessors of the seeds of afflictions, because they are considered to be liberated by nature, just like the minds of arhats. Because there is no simultaneous arising and ceasing. Saying "Because there is no simultaneous arising and ceasing" is to show that the minds without outflows are not the basis for the seeds of afflictions, because they are contrary to them. Whatever is contrary to something is not the basis for the seed of that thing, like darkness and light. How are they contrary? Because they are incompatible and hostile, they are known to not arise and cease simultaneously. Those things that are sometimes considered to arise and cease simultaneously are not considered to be mutually incompatible or hostile. Thus, through this order, even the contaminated virtuous mind is not the basis for the seeds of afflictions, let alone the uncontaminated mind. The word "again" after that refers to arising from the path of seeing. The words "a long time has passed" and so on are merely for understanding the meaning. The position of the Vaibhashikas regarding attainment has already been refuted by the Sutra school, so it is not discussed here. The Sutra school also has the fault of not having a basis for habitual tendencies.

Therefore, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, the seeds of afflictions and near afflictions are impossible, this is determined by reason, and it is concluded with this. Regarding "volitional action as the condition for consciousness," some people's view is that in acknowledging the dependent arising of the three lifetimes, only the consciousness that connects rebirth is conditioned by volitional action. This is only refuted by the Sautrāntikas. How it is refuted must be understood from the perspective of dependent arising. Therefore, according to the view of the Sautrāntikas, only the arising of consciousness that is completely imbued by meritorious actions, etc., is called volitional action as the condition for consciousness. Because it is so, the limb of consciousness is shown in the chapter on the afflictions of karma. The establishment of the habit of volitional action must also be understood from the negation as mentioned above, and from the showing of the limb of consciousness in the chapter on dependent arising, that it is impossible for the consciousnesses that enter the womb. Therefore, only the arising of the ālaya-vijñāna that is completely imbued by volitional action is called volitional action as the condition for consciousness. Previously, in the chapter on the nature of consciousness, the uncommon dominant condition, it was said that only future consciousness is volitional action as the condition for consciousness. Now, because it is the chapter on the afflictions of karma, it is not said that way. The seed of volitional action and the future seed of consciousness, both of these are generally limbs of consciousness. If the limb of consciousness is the ālaya-vijñāna, then is this not contradictory to the sutra distinguishing the limb of consciousness as the six consciousnesses that enter the womb? No, because there, it is considered that the cause is shown by the effect in the subsequent order, just as hunger and thirst show the difference in tactile sensation. Therefore, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, the afflictions of karma that project rebirth are impossible. The so-called "without it" means without the ālaya-vijñāna.
