Consciousness or eye consciousness, such as desire, etc., or eye consciousness that completely grasps the habits of desire, etc., ear consciousness, etc., or eye consciousness that completely grasps the habits of desire, etc., if eye consciousness will instruct other subsequent eye consciousnesses, then, with regard to that, the power to prevent desire, etc., from instructing eye consciousness itself, such as what is called eye consciousness, etc., that itself is the seed of those things, and it will become instructed with habits, as has been said in between. How is this not reasonable? Because there is no need, that which establishes habits is for the sake of producing a result that is in accordance with itself, and that is not reasonable in this view, as such, the cessation of eye consciousness, that which is interrupted by other consciousnesses, is shown by that which is, etc. That which is interrupted by other consciousnesses is interrupted by ear consciousness, etc. There is no habit and the place of habit is also not found, because the habits of desire, etc., have ceased together with their support, therefore, because there is no seed, the eye consciousness that arises from that, which is similar to and complete with desire, etc., will not arise. Because it belongs to one continuum, the ear consciousness itself arises subsequently, like the stream of the Alaya consciousness, does it not completely grasp and arise the habits held by the eye consciousness? That is not so, because the supports are different, it is extremely difficult to establish that it belongs to one continuum itself, that is, because it contradicts the three differences. As such, it has already been distinguished there. If again this is only belonging to one continuum, in this way, when the one consciousness itself arises from the support of the eye, etc., from that and that place, it only obtains the name of that and that, even if it is like that, it is still not reasonable, because with the nature of co-arising and ceasing, it is impossible for the previous moment to establish habits in the subsequent moment, and even if the habits abide by the nature of Dharma, it is impossible to arise without being completely nourished, and in the state of mindlessness, with the very cessation of the mind's continuum, as has been said

Because it would be a fault of regression, and also because it is difficult to establish the unity of the substance of the continuum merely by relying on different bases. Furthermore, here, the Vaibhāṣikas say that afflictions arise from past afflictions, and that visual consciousness also arises. Therefore, it is said that it is not permissible for attachment and so on to arise from that which is non-existent and past. The phrase "from past actions" should be exemplified by those actions that have already yielded their ripened fruit. An equipotent cause interrupted by a moment does not produce its own fruit, because it takes a long time after it has ceased, like something that has already yielded its ripened fruit. Furthermore, the phrase "from past actions" is the view of the Kāśyapīyas, because according to them, a small part of the past exists, namely, all equipotent causes and ripened causes and effects that have not yet been yielded. A small part does not exist, namely, the ripened causes and effects that have already been yielded. That is why they say that. That is also said in order to refute the Sautrāntikas. In order to refute visual consciousness being a gateway to desire and so on, it is said that visual consciousness arises together with desire and so on. If it is said that visual consciousness, because it is an affliction that is concomitant, leaves an imprint on the desire and so on that it relies on in order to produce such a result, that is not reasonable. The phrase "because it relies on it" should not be understood here as meaning that whatever mental events rely on, the basis itself does not become a gateway. Because if that were the case, then the seven entering consciousnesses, the ālaya-vijñāna, and the concomitant contact and so on would necessarily become gateways, which is not permissible. Therefore, it should be distinguished in this way: it is not a gateway to desire and so on, because each moment depends on others, because it has a cause of arising, just like sound and so on. The phrase "because it is impermanent" means that it is not a gateway to desire, because the cause is impermanent, just like sound and lightning and so on.
