DTG134 0005.A Concise Explanation Differentiating the Secret Meaning..g2.0f

It is not shown there. For the Vaibhashika school, contact and so on, which are similar to the alaya-vijñana, are not acknowledged. This characteristic of what should be trained is established by refuting what is acknowledged by other schools as what should be trained, and the refutation will be explained in detail later. The so-called "that is the nature of habit" means that habit is a dharma that should be trained, so whatever is the nature of what should be trained is also the nature of habit. The Sautrantika school believes that the five aggregates of consciousness and the form with the support are what should be trained, and the refutation of those heroes will be explained later. If there are those who think that only the six aggregates of consciousness are what should be trained, and not form, the refutation of those people has already been explained because it is not shown in the scriptures. However, in addition to that, with "to the six" and so on, another refutation is started. Among them, some say that the six entering consciousnesses do not plant habits in each other, because according to what other schools acknowledge, they are not related by the nature of arising and ceasing together. And others ask: How is it acknowledged like that? Answer: Because it contradicts the three differences. Thus, these three, support, object, and attention, are seen as separate and different in the six aggregates of consciousness. If they arise simultaneously, then it will contradict that, so they say. This is not reasonable, because even though the sense organs and so on are not different, they are not seen to arise simultaneously; and when looking at the moon and so on, even though the sense organs and so on of beings are different, they are seen to arise simultaneously. Therefore, it should be analyzed differently: the six entering consciousnesses are not what should be trained by each other because they are not related. For the time being, because they are not form, there is no connection of contact. Just arising at the same time is not a connection.

When all six consciousnesses arise successively, it is not because there is no homogeneous and immediate cause. Because the basis, object, and attention are different, it is not a connection, because the three are contradictory. The basis, object, and attention of the six consciousnesses are seen to be different. If so, it will be contradictory. These six consciousnesses are not related to each other because their bases and so on are different, just like other continuums, which is harmed by inference. Merely belonging to the continuum of one sentient being is not a connection, because it is difficult to establish that it belongs to the continuum of one sentient being due to the difference in the basis and so on. Entering consciousness and Alaya consciousness are like a quiver, and they are related because they depend on each other. If it is said that because the basis is the same, there is a connection, so the previous moment of eye consciousness is the beginning of the next moment of eye consciousness, then it is said, "Because there is no simultaneity." These are not the guided and the guide, because the times are different, like sesame seeds and flowers at different times. If it is said again that because the previous and subsequent continuums are the same, so the types are the same, so the guided and the guide, then it is said, "If you say in terms of type, it will become something else." Because the colored root is also the same type, the first moment of the colored one will become the guided one. Therefore, it should not be said that only the continuum of mind is the guided one. Because if you analyze it that way, there is nothing other than Alaya consciousness that can be used as the guided one, so in order not to guide others, it is said, "External and internal," and so on. Both external and internal seeds are producers and projectors, and external seeds are those that manifest and produce sprouts. The transmission of trunks and so on is the projector until it resides. The inner seed is Alaya

English

Consciousness also manifestly generates name and form. The continuum up to old age and death is what throws. If it is only the generator, but how is it that even contact throws? It is said, 'Because the unsown and the dead throw.' If it were only the generator and not the thrower, then the continuum of unsown seeds such as barley, which remain in places of purification, etc., would not be connected for a long time. The term 'unsown' means that what is sown is transformed by water, etc., and is therefore not thrown. The continuum of dead bodies, etc., would also not follow. If so, what happens? They would perish immediately upon death. If, again, the unsown seed and the dead corpse continue only by their own continuum and not by the power of the thrower, then it is said, 'They perish in the end by their own nature.' Thus, just as a lamp with exhausted marrow and oil perishes in dependence on external conditions, so too, by its own nature, it is seen to perish by completely transforming and decaying. Therefore, it is certain that the thrower is exhausted without being eaten, and therefore the continuum of other conditioned phenomena does not continue, so it is recollected. Thus, having shown that the external and internal seeds are the same, the non-identity is expressed by saying, 'Or the external seed is not nourished,' etc. The word 'or' means that there is also nourishment, for the nourished seeds are those of Matulunga, smeared with crow-stone juice, etc. The un-nourished seeds are those of barley, etc. The internal is not what is desired, for it may be that what was previously non-existent arises, as in the case of what is said in the second distinction, or it may be that the seed that abides by its own nature is completely nourished. In all cases, if the nourished is the seed, then the external is not like that. Because the internal, etc., produce fruits that are in accordance with themselves, and because they are completely nourished by water, etc., and the power is established, it is also called the complete nourishment of the difference of the seed. Others recite, 'Or the external seed is not sown,' etc. The unsown seed is, for example, the root of sesame and utpala, and durva.
