Furthermore, in accordance with what is heard, accumulating roots of virtue, increasing the seeds of purification, and also eliminating the seeds of all afflictions. By means of the twelve moments coming together, the nature of the self that can be approached is manifested, because the seed of purification is the dominant condition. Therefore, it is said, "Because of that, all actions." And because all afflictions, with their nature of being incompatible, are the dominant condition, and the seed of purification is the causal condition, Nirvana will also be attained. This was said. Or, because the seed of all afflictions is the causal condition, and the seed of purification is also the causal condition of purification, it is precisely in combining them in order that it is said, "Because of that, all actions, and Nirvana will also be attained." In another way, in order to refute the permanent cause, it is said, "Beginningless time." Time is the characteristic of arising and ceasing. From the perspective of that continuously entering, there is beginninglessness, that is the realm of beginningless time. The self-proclaimed lords and so forth by others are not like that. Some assert that the cause is what was done before, but even within their own schools, some conceive that the cause is earlier and the effect is later. Both of these manifestly cling to the notion that cause and effect have a before and after. In order to eliminate those evil views of the past and future, it is said, "The place of sameness of all phenomena." The place of simultaneity is the place of sameness, meaning that the cause exists simultaneously with the effect. But even regarding that, it is not necessarily grasped, because some also assert that the entities of cause and effect are different in time. In order to refute those who speak of annihilation, some say, "I will be annihilated here." In order to refute them, it is said, "Because of that, all actions," meaning that because of that, one will transmigrate to all realms of existence. In order to refute those who speak of permanence, some conceive that the lord of the prison of samsara is permanent, in order to refute them, Nirvana also

will become. Thus it was said. Alternatively, by examining the object of knowledge, one analyzes the meaning of the term ālaya-vijñāna. It is said that the object of knowledge, in its own nature, is the place of the three characteristics of knowable things. This is also shown in verse: "The realm of beginningless time." This is its own nature. "The place of similarity of all dharmas." This means that it is the place of all other dependent minds and mental factors. "Because it exists, all beings." This is the nature of being examined. It is also explained that all afflicted dharmas are examined. "Nirvana can also be attained." This is the support of the perfectly established. It is also explained that completely purified dharmas are perfectly established. "The seeds of all dharmas." Etc., if someone asks whether the well-known ālaya-vijñāna in the Śrāvakayāna, namely universal joy, should be combined with this? Because the term vijñāna is not mentioned here, and previously vijñāna was asked about. Therefore, one should combine those that mention vijñāna. If so, then should the vijñāna of the limb of existence, which is famous in the Mahāsaṃghika school, be combined? Because ālaya is not mentioned there either, and previously ālaya was asked about. Therefore, whatever mentions both is said to be the uncommon aspect of the Mahāyāna. "All dharmas" refers to all afflictions. The examined nature of the Sāṃkhya school, etc., is also like that, and in order to distinguish them, the term vijñāna was spoken. If this becomes their place, then does it become the place of the dependent and the depended upon? The answer is that "all seeds" was spoken, meaning that it becomes the place in the manner of a cause. If it is vijñāna, then what is its object? It is seeds and eyes, etc., and objects of form, etc. Seeds are also of two types, namely seeds of virtue, non-virtue, and neutral, and seeds that are mature and immature. Both of these types of seeds are the object of this vijñāna in the three realms. Eyes, etc.
