Because it is said in the scriptures that all dharmas are constantly accompanied by the afflicted dharmas as their cause. The nature of the fruit is what arises from the power of its karma. Whatever arises together with all the afflicted dharmas such as desire, which are included in the consciousness that can enter, those that produce habits are the nature of the fruit of the Alaya-consciousness, because they act as cause and effect to each other. It will also be said below: "Dharmas arise from the habits of speech, they arise from those themselves," and so on. What is meant by "habit"? This is a question raised in order to determine the nature of habit. It is said in the scriptures, what is the nature of the cause of their arising, which arises and ceases together with those dharmas, that should be said, is what is to be perfumed by habit. That is to say, arising and ceasing at the same time as those dharmas that perfume habits, after a long period of accumulation, even if those dharmas that perfume habits no longer approach, the nature of the cause that can arise, is what is to be perfumed by habit. The so-called "nature" means that from what is to be perfumed by habit and what perfumes, it is shown by the cause of things, as if separating the habit alone. For example, if sesame is perfumed with flowers, sesame and flowers arise and cease together, but the nature of the cause of sesame producing other odors, this is a famous example. For example, sesame arises and ceases together with jasmine flowers and so on for a long time, even if the flowers are removed, it can produce the nature of the cause of its odor. Also, for those who practice desire and so on, the habits of desire and so on arise from the cause of arising and ceasing together. For those who have heard much, the habits of hearing much also arise from hearing arising and ceasing together. Just as it purifies the wisdom and sound of holding the Dharma, the Alaya-consciousness should also be viewed in the same way. That is to say, relying on other famous examples, the nature of the Alaya-consciousness is used to show the nature of the Alaya-consciousness. There are many examples.

It is because of relying on the world and treatises, and because of the difference between outer and inner. Are the alaya-consciousness and the substance of those seeds different? Or, residing without difference, understanding this as being placed in a double negation, keeping it in mind, wanting to blame both, one asks. If they are separate, then the virtues, non-virtues, and the Dharma that the sutra fragments speak of as the door to habits, just as they are, the habits of those will also become the fault of turning to separate sides. If they are not separate, then it is unreasonable that they are not separate themselves, because cause and effect are separate. That they and the substance are neither separate nor non-separate, this refers to the way in which the habits reside in the alaya-consciousness in a way that completely transcends separate and non-separate, because of the nature of the difference in abilities. Habit refers to the difference in abilities, and ability cannot be said to be the same as or different from the one with ability. Asking whether they are mutually separate or non-separate is not in accordance with the Dharma, because it is established by taking the one with ability as the cause. According to the Sūtra School's view, the arising of wisdom that grasps the appearance of objects, and the occasion to think of the appearances as mutually separate and non-separate, cannot be found, because both of these situations will become faults. For example, the wisdom called "trees" is one, but the appearances are many, and the appearances are temporarily not one, because each recognizes in many ways. Nor is it many, because multiple knowledges do not arise simultaneously, and because it does not go beyond the one and only consciousness. Similarly, for the habits residing in the alaya-consciousness, it should also be understood that they completely transcend separate and non-separate. The alaya-consciousness and all afflicted dharmas, at the same time become the cause of one, one becomes another, how is this viewed? This is because it is impossible for one to have the cause of another. For example, a burning candle, this is understood through reason. When wood burns, flames arise, and the burning of its branches is fire.
