A Commentary on the Compendium of the Great Vehicle. Without inherent existence. A Commentary on the Compendium of the Great Vehicle. Without inherent existence. In Sanskrit: Mahāyānasi graha upanibandhanaṃ. In Tibetan: A Commentary on the Compendium of the Great Vehicle. Volume One. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī. Because earlier teachers analyzed and differentiated according to reasoning, those with biased minds, not understanding, become doubtful, therefore, the compendium will be categorized. Desiring to gather all of the Great Vehicle through ten points, by way of expressing those ten points, which are the essence of the treatise's body, as the scriptures themselves, topics such as "Entering deeply into the Great Vehicle" are brought up. By the term of quality or designation, it is called "Entering deeply into the Great Vehicle," because through this, one can deeply understand the Great Vehicle, or because of deeply entering into it, it is called "Entering deeply into the Great Vehicle." The bodhisattva who has deeply entered the Great Vehicle, having obtained the qualities of dhāraṇī and eloquence, being able to grasp and fully explain the meaning of the Great Vehicle, is spoken of by that name. The term bodhisattva is because he aims at bodhi and sentient beings. The term "sattva" here refers to living beings. It also appears to be named by its object, for example, the samādhi that aims at the unattractive and so on is called unattractiveness and emptiness, and the mental remorse that aims at evil deeds is called regret. Or, because he can endure for the sake of bodhi, he is a bodhisattva. "The great essence of the Great Vehicle" means unsurpassed through profundity and vastness. The word "essence" signifies entity and function, for example, fire is the essence of heat, and poison is the essence of causing death. This is the great essence, so it is great, its object is the great essence. The so-called "explaining it" is because others do not understand it themselves, so it must be fully explained. The word "because" indicates intention. The so-called "in the presence of the Blessed One" is because he has subdued the four māras and possesses qualities such as power, therefore he is the Blessed One.

Having passed away, he became a Buddha. Why is that? Because it will be mentioned below as "Buddha Bhagavan." The phrase "in the presence of the Bhagavan" indicates that it is something permitted by the Buddha and is trustworthy. Because one is close to the teacher, one does not speak of other things. For example, this phrase indicates that it is spoken in order to establish the desire to approach the ten grounds. "Beginning with the Mahayana" means for that purpose or to be dominated. It is not beginning with the Hearer's Vehicle or worldly matters. Again, mentioning the Mahayana is to ensure that it begins only with this and not with others. For example, beginning with worldly matters, one should speak truthfully and not be angry. Even if the begging is small, one should give alms. And so on, the Buddha's teachings are more excellent than other various teachings. If it is from the perspective of the Hearer's Vehicle, alas, all conditioned things are impermanent. They are of the nature of arising and ceasing. And so on, it is more excellent than others. Therefore, it should be determined. The name "Dharma Abhidhamma Mahayana Sutra" is because it is the cause of completely distinguishing the Dharma, or it is named "Dharma Abhidhamma" because of fame, and it is spoken from a special Mahayana Sutra, not from other Sutras. That is a vehicle and also a great vehicle, or it is the vehicle of great beings, so it is the Mahayana. Because the cause and effect are great, it is the agent, and it is the basis for what should be traveled and accomplished. In short, it is the ten grounds of the Bodhisattva and its fruit. In detail, it is because it has seven great aspects. Those that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment, and those that are the Paramitas, and those that are the trainings, and the basis and signs, etc., are the Mahayana. Its Sutra is because it has been spoken. The sound that appears as a single sound and a combined word is the word of the hearing consciousness that follows the form of the desired meaning. If that is the case, how did the Bodhisattva explain it? Because the hearing consciousness was not explained by him. Because it arose from it, it is said that way. Just as one finds treatises and mantras, etc., in a dream due to the influence of gods, etc. Otherwise, the form of speech
