This is the scriptural authority on the alaya-consciousness itself. There is also another scriptural authority: "It is the place of all dharmas, the consciousness that possesses all seeds." Here, the first line is explained by the second line. The term "for the noble ones" is the definitive term for bodhisattvas, not for the alaya-consciousness. The term "to be joined there" means to exist. The term "those who have birth" means that those who have birth are called those who have birth. The term "completely afflicted dharma" means the opposite of complete purification. The term "by joining in the nature of the beings that are born" means having the function of holding. Furthermore, the scriptural authority here is from the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, which says: Mañjuśrī, in this cycle of the six realms, whatever beings, in whatever class of beings, whether born from eggs, or born from wombs, or born from moisture, or born miraculously, when their bodies are manifested and arise in the place of birth, they first take in two ways. Namely, taking the sense faculty form with support, and taking name and form, and relying on taking the habits of elaboration that impose names and discriminations, the mind of all seeds ripens, enters, grows, increases, and becomes vast. Among them, in the realm of form, there are both takings, but in the formless realm, there are not two takings. Mañjuśrī, that consciousness is also called the taking consciousness, because it holds and takes this body. It is also called the alaya-consciousness, because it accomplishes this body, and through the meaning of the same bliss, it universally joins and completely joins. It is also called the mind, because it is universally accumulated and nearly accumulated by form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharmas. Mañjuśrī, relying and abiding on that taking consciousness, the six aggregates of consciousness arise, namely, eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness. There, consciousness and

Depending on the complete eye and forms, eye consciousness arises. Together with eye consciousness, when time and object are the same, discriminating mind consciousness also arises. If eye consciousness arises once, then eye consciousness and discriminating mind consciousness with the same object also arise only once. If two, three, or four aggregates of consciousness arise together, or all five aggregates arise together, then there, with the same object as the five aggregates of consciousness, discriminating mind consciousness also arises only once. To explain in detail with an example, wise one, for example, when a great river flows, if the proximate cause for one wave to arise is present, then only one wave arises. If the proximate cause for two or many waves to arise is present, then many waves arise, and the flow of that river itself will not be interrupted, nor will it be completely exhausted. In the center of a completely pure mirror, if the proximate cause for one image to arise is present, then only one image arises. If the proximate cause for two or many images to arise is present, then many images arise, and the center of that mirror will not completely become the object of images, nor will it be completely mixed. Wise one, similarly, like a river and like a mirror, the receiving consciousness, relying on and abiding in this, if the proximate cause for eye consciousness to arise once is present, then eye consciousness also arises only once. If the proximate cause for all five aggregates of consciousness to arise once is present, then all five aggregates of consciousness arise once. Wise one, thus, a Bodhisattva, relying on understanding the Dharma and abiding in understanding the Dharma, is skilled in the secrets of beings, mind, and consciousness. The Tathagata is

If a Bodhisattva is skilled in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness, then that alone is the attainment of all of everything. Broad Wisdom, for what reason does a Bodhisattva not see the individual aggregates of grasping within, nor see the consciousness of grasping, and indeed, it is thus as it truly is, nor see the Alaya, nor see the Alaya-consciousness, nor see accumulation, nor see mind, nor see eye, nor see form, nor see eye-consciousness, nor see ear, nor see sound, nor see ear-consciousness, nor see nose, nor see smell, nor see nose-consciousness, nor see tongue, nor see taste, nor see tongue-consciousness, nor see body, nor see tangible objects, nor see body-consciousness, Broad Wisdom, for what reason does a Bodhisattva not see the individual intellect within, nor see phenomena, nor see mind-consciousness, and indeed, it is thus as it truly is, that is called a Bodhisattva skilled in the ultimate meaning, and the Tathagata also says that a Bodhisattva skilled in the ultimate meaning is skilled in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness. Broad Wisdom, only in this way is one skilled in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness, and the Tathagata Bodhisattva is skilled in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness, and only in this way is it attained. Moreover, this meaning is shown by verses such as "The consciousness of grasping is deep and subtle," because it is difficult to understand. "All seeds flow like a river," this is because of entering in sequence, so all seeds enter in a momentary sequence like a river. "The consciousness of grasping" is a synonym of name and a definition. "If one clings to it as self, it is not right," this means do not cling to entering into one state itself as self. The explanation of "is the cause of all material faculties" is, in this way, it follows until life exists.
