do. From the establishment as the fruit itself, up to "arising dependent on the habits of beginningless time." Because of the habits of these dharmas, from beginningless time when habits are fully grasped, the reason for arising together with these dharmas and ceasing should be explained. The reason for obtaining arising and ceasing together with all afflicted dharmas is called the cause of these dharmas themselves. Furthermore, are the alaya-vijñana and the seeds of all afflicted dharmas different or not different? What would happen? If it is different from it, then all parts would also obtain difference, and the moment of alaya-vijñana would also be harmed, because it is different from it. If it has the habit of good and non-good self, then it itself is the seed, therefore it is considered unexpressed. If it is not different, then how is it many? Therefore, even that is not the case, because there is fault in either case. From "it is not different in substance from those that abide in it," up to "all seeds," saying "it is neither different nor non-different" is to eliminate the faults previously mentioned. "It occurs in that way" means it occurs in that manner. "It has a special power of occurring" means it is endowed with a special power that produces all afflicted dharmas. Being endowed with the power to produce it is called all seeds. An example of this meaning is that just as the seed of barley has the cause of producing sprouts, this is its cause. Also, just as a barley fruit that has been kept for a long time or destroyed by fire, when its power is destroyed, even if it remains in that form, it becomes seedless because its power is weakened. Similarly, because the alaya-vijñana has the power to produce all dharmas. Therefore, because it has power, it is called all seeds. Also, like all afflicted dharmas

So, how should one view the simultaneous becoming of a single cause? This is shown through an example, just as the arising of a lamp flame and the burning of the wick are simultaneous. In the same instant, the wick is the cause upon which the event occurs. The burning also relies on the burning to be consumed in the same instant, so the burning is also the cause of the burning. Thus, the cause of simultaneous arising is also shown. Therefore, even while existing, it is seen as being established as both cause and effect. How is it that the alaya-vijñana is a 'pervasively defiled dharma,' and so on, up to 'because no other cause or condition is found'? This shows that the alaya-vijñana and the pervasively defiled dharmas are mutually causal, and thus are causal conditions. If the latent impressions are not different and not diverse, how can they be the cause of various different dharmas? To illustrate how it can be the cause, an example will be given: Just as cloth bound with many threads is not seen as diverse, but when placed in a dye vat, it appears diverse, so the alaya-vijñana is like the place where the cloth is kept. The dye vat where the fruit is manifested is the dye vat where the fruit is manifested, and placing it there means being seized by conditions. Although it is not diverse at the time of the latent impressions, at the time of the fruit, the nature of the cause of various dharmas is seen, like dyed cloth. Second Chapter. This is called the most subtle and profound aspect of the Great Vehicle. It is called subtle because it is difficult for the minds of ordinary beings to comprehend. It is called most profound because it is difficult even for arhats to comprehend. In short, starting from 'dependent arising is these two,' up to 'clinging to the agent and the self.' Among these, the two terms 'discriminating nature' and 'discriminating beauty and ugliness' reveal the name of dependent arising. The phrase 'relying on the alaya-vijñana' and so on refers to the dharmas that arise from the alaya-vijñana.

That is the nature of differentiation, because nature becomes the object of the cause that distinguishes various categories. Whatever has ignorance, etc., is what distinguishes between pleasant and unpleasant. Therefore, pleasant and unpleasant, or becoming the cause of various differences in the essence of self. Some say that it arises from the cause previously made, but they do not want it to arise from the cause of the agent of the person. This is like showing the example of an elephant to a blind person. Being blind with ignorance means being blind with ignorance, not understanding the nature of the Alaya consciousness. The so-called cause is what previously established its own characteristics. Establishing the nature of the cause is the nature of the cause itself. Establishing the fruit is showing the nature of the fruit, that is, not understanding it, and due to the power of ignorance, not understanding the difference of the Alaya consciousness, therefore thinking that the cause of all dharmas is self-nature, etc. Secondly, because of not understanding the distinction between pleasant and unpleasant, one deeply understands the author himself. In this regard, the continuity of all dharmas is the Alaya consciousness, because habits accumulate in it. The fruit is also it, because it is perfumed in it. Nature is the Vipaka consciousness, called all seeds. Whatever obtains the essence of self separately is the Vipaka. The nature of all seeds is because it is perfumed by it. The so-called all bodies and all beings, among which there are five kinds of beings. Various forms that are similar and dissimilar to those beings are all bodies. The Alaya consciousness is the son who shows the seeds of all dharmas, therefore wanting to fully clarify the nature of the essence, so it is shown with five verses such as outer and inner. Among them, among the outer etc., what has the inner nature is the Alaya consciousness. What is not obvious is the external object, meaning it is not indicated by the scriptural proof. The second is the Alaya consciousness, good and bad. Another meaning is, all afflictions and complete purification. The so-called conventional is the external object, that conventional
