It is consciousness. What is mental consciousness? It is the distinct knowing that relies on the mind and focuses on phenomena. What is the establishment of realms? Whatever is the form aggregate is the ten realms: the eye realm, the form realm, the ear realm, the sound realm, the nose realm, the smell realm, the tongue realm, the taste realm, the body realm, the touch realm, and also one aspect of the dharma realm. Whatever is the feeling aggregate, the perception aggregate, and the formation aggregate is one aspect of the dharma realm. Whatever is the consciousness aggregate is the seven consciousness realms: the eye consciousness realm, the ear, nose, tongue, body, mind consciousness realm, and the mind realm. Among all the realms, what is not included by the aggregates? It is the unconditioned that exists in the dharma realm. Furthermore, there are eight unconditioned entities: the suchness of virtuous dharmas, similarly, the suchness of non-virtuous dharmas, the suchness of the unspecified dharmas, space, non-analytical cessation, analytical cessation, immovability, and the cessation of perception and feeling. What is the suchness of virtuous dharmas? It is the two types of selflessness, emptiness, signlessness, the ultimate limit, and the ultimate truth; the element of dharma is also that. Why is suchness called suchness? Because it is unchanging. Why is it called emptiness? Because defilements do not arise. Why is it called signlessness? Because signs are pacified. Why is it called the ultimate limit? Because it is an undeluded object. Why is it called the ultimate truth? Because it is the sublime object of the wisdom of the noble ones. Why is it called the element of dharma? Because it is the cause of all the dharmas of the hearers, solitary realizers, and Buddhas. Just as the suchness of virtuous dharmas is, so too is the suchness of non-virtuous dharmas and the suchness of the unspecified dharmas.

It should be observed in this way. What is space? It is formless and opens up space for all actions. What is cessation not through individual analysis? It is because it is not separated from what is ceased. What is cessation through individual analysis? It is because it is separated from what is ceased. What is the immovable? It is the cessation of pleasure and pain, being separated from the desire for good increase, but not separated from the desire for the higher realms. What is the cessation of perception and feeling? It is being separated from the desire for the realm of nothingness, but ascending from the peak of existence, with the mind dwelling in peace, preceded by the perception of mindfulness. The mind and mental phenomena are not dependent, and some of those that are dependent are also ceased. What are the five forms? And what are the aggregates of feeling, the aggregates of perception, and the aggregates of formation? What are the eight unconditioned phenomena? Those gathered together as one, the nature of the sixteen aspects, is the realm of phenomena. What is the establishment of the sense bases? The ten realms of form are the ten sense bases. What are the seven realms of consciousness? Those are the mind sense base. What is the realm of phenomena? That is the phenomena sense base. Therefore, the aggregates, realms, and sense bases become three types of phenomena: the aggregate of form, the realm of phenomena, and the mind sense base. It is also called the eye, and also called the eye realm. If the eye is the eye realm, is the eye realm also the eye? The eye is, but there are also those that are not the eye realm, such as the final eye of an Arhat. The eye realm is, but there are also those that are not the eye, such as those in an egg, or those that are gelatinous, or those that are flickering, or those that are elongated, or those that are in the mother's womb with undeveloped eyes, or those that are blind, or the cause of the eyes of ordinary beings born in the formless realm. There are also those that are both the eye and the eye realm, such as other situations that are not those. There are also those that are neither the eye nor the eye realm, such as complete extinction in the realm of Nirvana without remainder, and in the formless realm.

Of the noble ones who are born. Just as the eye and the eye realm are, so are the ear, nose, tongue, body, and body realm. These should be applied accordingly. Is whatever is mind also the mind realm? Is whatever is the mind realm also the mind? Answer: There is mind that is not the mind realm, namely, the final mind of an Arhat. There is a mind realm that is not mind, namely, the mind realm of one who has entered cessation. There is mind that is also the mind realm, namely, other situations that are not the above. There is that which is neither mind nor the mind realm, namely, those who are completely extinguished in the realm of nirvana without remainder of aggregates. Where one arises and is born, does the eye of one's own realm see the forms of that realm? Answer: The eye of that realm sees the forms of that realm, and also sees the forms of other realms, namely, those who arise and are born in the desire realm, the eye that operates in the desire realm sees the forms that operate in the desire realm, and those who operate in the form realm, those of higher realms see those of lower realms. Just as the eye sees forms, so the ear hears sounds. Just as one arises and is born in the desire realm, so it is when one is born in the form realm. Those born in the desire realm, the nose, tongue, and body that operate in the desire realm, smell the smells that operate in the desire realm, taste the tastes, and touch the tangibles. Those who are born in the form realm, the body that operates in the form realm, touches the tangibles of its own realm. There, smell and taste do not exist in essence, because they are free from desire for food. Therefore, nose consciousness and tongue consciousness also do not exist. Those who are born in the desire realm, the mind that operates in the desire realm, knows the things that operate in the three realms, and also knows the undefiled dharmas. Just as one is born in the desire realm, so it is when one is born in the form realm. Those who arise and are born in the formless realm, namely, those who operate in the formless realm
