That which accords with cause and effect is designated as attainment. What is quickness? That which causes cause and effect to arise quickly is designated as quickness. What is order? That which causes cause and effect to arise one by one is designated as order. What is time? That which causes cause and effect to arise continuously is designated as time. What is place? That in all ten directions—east, south, west, north, below, and above—cause and effect exist is designated as place. What is number? That the constituents are individually distinct is designated as number. What is assembly? That the conditions of cause and effect are gathered is designated as assembly. What is the designation of the aggregate of consciousness? Whatever is mind and intellect is also consciousness. What is mind? It is the all-ground consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna), which is the basis of all phenomena, completely cultivated by the predispositions of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. The consciousness of maturation and the consciousness of taking are also that, because they accumulate their predispositions. What is intellect? It is that which constantly clings to self, takes the all-ground consciousness as its object, and is associated with the four afflictions: the view of self, attachment to self, the pride of "I am," and ignorance. It also operates in all virtuous, non-virtuous, and indeterminate states, except for the path of manifestation, the absorption of cessation, and the state of no-more-learning. Furthermore, it is the consciousness that has just ceased from any of the six consciousnesses. What is consciousness? It is the collection of the six consciousnesses: eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness. What is eye consciousness? It is that which relies on the eye and focuses on form, thereby individually distinguishing. What is ear consciousness? It is that which relies on the ear and focuses on sound, thereby individually distinguishing. What is nose consciousness? It is that which relies on the nose and focuses on smell, thereby individually distinguishing. What is tongue consciousness? It is that which relies on the tongue and focuses on taste, thereby individually distinguishing. What is body consciousness? It is that which relies on the body and focuses on the tangible, thereby individually
