It is another samadhi, or entering into the samadhi of another vehicle, and the aspect of abiding, which is connected with desire and has the function of interrupting (virtuous dharmas). What is sleep? Relying on the cause of sleep, the gathering of the mind towards good, non-good, unspecified, and time and non-time, reason and non-reason, belongs to the part of ignorance, and has the function of being the basis for the loss of action. What is regret? Relying on actions and non-actions that have been thought of and not thought of, for good, non-good, unspecified, and time and non-time, reason and non-reason, the mind attends in the manner of remorse, belonging to the part of ignorance, and has the function of interrupting the abiding of the mind. What is investigation? Relying on mind or wisdom, it is expression by the mind of seeking everywhere; this is a coarse mind. What is analysis? Relying on mind or wisdom, it is expression by the mind of individually examining; this is a subtle mind. They are those whose function is to be the basis for abiding in contact and not abiding in contact. Furthermore, the action of virtuous dharmas is to abandon aspects that are incompatible with oneself. The action of afflictions and near afflictions is to interrupt their own antidotes. What are the formations that are not associated with mind? They are attainment, the samadhi of non-perception, the samadhi of cessation, the non-perceiver, the life faculty, similarity, birth, aging, abiding, impermanence, the collection of name-sentences, the collection of word-sentences, the collection of letter-sentences, the state of being an ordinary being, entering, individual determination, combination, quickness, order, time, place, number, and collection. What is attainment? For the increase and decrease of good, non-good, and unspecified dharmas, it is called attainment, obtaining, and having. What is called the samadhi of non-perception? Having separated from desire for the increase of good, but not having separated from desire for the upper realms, the mind that has previously abandoned the perception of arising.

以作意止息心及心所之不坚固法,名为无想定。何为灭尽定?谓已离无所有处之贪,由作意先导,寂止超越有顶,由此止息心及心所之不坚固法,并止息彼等坚固法中之若干者,名为灭尽定。何为无想有情?谓生于无想有情天中,止息心及心所之不坚固法,名为无想有情。何为命根?谓依于同类,由宿业所引之住之决定,名为命。何为同类?谓于彼彼有情之类中,彼彼有情之身相似,名为同类。何为生?谓于同类中,诸行从无有而生起,名为生。何为老?谓于同类中,诸行之相续变异,名为老。何为住?谓于同类中,诸行之相续不坏灭,名为住。何为无常性?谓于同类中,诸行之相续坏灭,名为无常性。何为名之聚?谓于诸法之自性之假立名言,名为名之聚。何为句之聚?谓于诸法之差别之假立名言,名为句之聚。何为字之聚?谓彼二者之所依之字,名为字之聚,谓为彼二者之显明之故。言说亦即彼,谓为如实宣说义之故。字者,谓于种类中不令变为他者之故。何为异生性?谓未得圣法,名为异生。何为趣入?谓因与果相续不断,名为趣入。何为各别决定?谓因与果各别相异,名为各别决定。何为和合?

Cessation of unstable mental and mental factors through attention is termed the 'unconscious attainment'. What is the 'cessation attainment'? Having abandoned attachment to the sphere of nothingness, through attention that precedes the pacified consciousness that transcends the peak of existence, thereby ceasing the unstable mental and mental factors, and also ceasing some of the stable ones among them, is termed the 'cessation attainment'. What is an 'unconscious being'? It is said that ceasing the unstable mental and mental factors of beings born among the gods of unconscious beings is called an 'unconscious being'. What is the 'vital faculty'? It is said that the definite abiding, drawn by past karma, in accordance with its kind, is called 'life'. What is 'of the same kind'? It is said that the similarity of bodies of those beings in that particular class of beings is called 'of the same kind'. What is 'birth'? It is said that the arising of formations from non-existence in the same class is called 'birth'. What is 'aging'? It is said that the alteration of the continuum of formations in the same class is called 'aging'. What is 'abiding'? It is said that the non-destruction of the continuum of formations in the same class is called 'abiding'. What is 'impermanence'? It is said that the destruction of the continuum of formations in the same class is called 'impermanence'. What is the 'collection of names'? It is said that the conventional designation of the essence of phenomena is called the 'collection of names'. What is the 'collection of sentences'? It is said that the conventional designation of the distinctions of phenomena is called the 'collection of sentences'. What is the 'collection of letters'? It is said that the letters that are the basis of those two are called the 'collection of letters', because they make those two clear. Speech is also that, because it truly expresses the meaning. A letter is that which does not allow something to change into something else within a category. What is 'being an ordinary person'? It is said that not having attained the noble Dharma is called 'being an ordinary person'. What is 'entering'? It is said that the uninterrupted continuation of cause and effect is called 'entering'. What is 'separate determination'? It is said that the distinct difference between cause and effect is called 'separate determination'. What is 'combination'?
