Abhidharma-samuccaya. Asaṅga. Abhidharma-samuccaya. Asaṅga. Here begins the Abhidharma-samuccaya. Homage to Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta! Summary: How many, why, appropriation, characteristics, their arrangement, order, meaning, types, collection, etc., are the four aspects. Collection, association, possession, and ascertainment are the four divisions. Truth, dharma attainment, connection, and speech are the divisions of ascertainment. This is the general summary of the Samuccaya. How many are the aggregates? How many are the elements? How many are the sources? The aggregates are five: the aggregate of form, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of formations, and the aggregate of consciousness. The elements are eighteen: the element of the eye, the element of the visible, the element of eye-consciousness, the element of the ear, the element of sound, the element of ear-consciousness, the element of the nose, the element of smell, the element of nose-consciousness, the element of the tongue, the element of taste, the element of tongue-consciousness, the element of the body, the element of the tangible, the element of body-consciousness, the element of mind, the element of dharmas, and the element of mind-consciousness. The sources are twelve: the source of the eye, the source of the visible, the source of the ear, the source of sound, the source of the nose, the source of smell, the source of the tongue, the source of taste, the source of the body, the source of the tangible, the source of the mind, and the source of dharmas. Why are there only five aggregates? Because of stating the five bases of self, that is, stating the base of self, the body together with what is taken up, stating the base of self, enjoyment, stating the base of self, designation, stating the base of self, the manifestation of dharma and non-dharma, and stating the place of those bases of self. Why are there only eighteen elements? By means of the body and what is taken up,

This is for holding the six kinds of present near-use. Why are there only twelve sources? Only the body and complete grasping are two. It is the door for the arising of the six kinds of future near-use. Why are they called "aggregates of clinging"? Because they possess clinging, therefore they are called aggregates of clinging. What is clinging? Here it refers to desire and attachment. Why are desire and attachment themselves called clinging? Because in order to accomplish the future and present aggregates, and completely not abandon them, that is, having desire for the future and special attachment to the present. Why are the realms and sources called phenomena with clinging? In this regard, it is explained as with the aggregates. What is the characteristic of the form aggregate? The characteristic of existing as form is in two ways: existing as form by touch and existing as form by object analysis. What is existing as form by touch? When touched by the aggregation of hands, it can become form, as well as the aggregation of clods of earth, the aggregation of sticks, the aggregation of weapons, cold, heat, hunger, thirst, mosquitoes, flesh-eating mosquitoes, wind, sun, and the aggregation of poisonous snakes can become form when touched. What is existing as form by object analysis? That is, regarding the object, this is this form, that is that form. This form is like this, that form is like that, whether established or not established, it is similar to the mind's discrimination, thereby clearly grasping. What is the characteristic of feeling? It is the characteristic of experiencing. What is the nature of experiencing? With it, one separately experiences the ripening results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. What is the characteristic of recognition? It is the characteristic of aggregating and knowing. That is, the nature of grasping characteristics and clearly grasping, with which one names the things that are seen, heard, distinguished, and known. What is the characteristic of formations? It is the characteristic of manifest formation. That is, the nature of the mind's manifest formation, with which one forms virtue and non-virtue.
