What is mind? Mind is the manifest activity of mind, the function of the mind, which has the function of engaging the mind in virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral things. What is attention? It is the engagement of the mind, which has the function of holding the mind to an object. What is contact? It is the complete cutting off of the transformation of the senses from the union of the three, which has the function of being the basis of feeling. What is desire? It is the desire to be in accordance with that and that in the desired object, which has the function of being the basis of initiating diligence. What is conviction? It is holding to a definite object as it is determined, which has the function of not being robbed. What is memory? It is the absence of forgetting of the mind in a familiar object, which has the function of not being distracted. What is Samadhi? It is the one-pointedness of mind on the object of investigation, which has the function of being the basis of knowledge. What is wisdom? It is the complete differentiation of the dharmas of the object of investigation itself, which has the function of reversing doubt. What is faith? It is the manifest belief in the aspects of existence, qualities, and abilities, and joy and desire, which has the function of being the basis of desire. What is conscientiousness? It is the avoidance of faults from oneself, which has the function of being the basis of properly restraining misconduct.
