It should be understood that the arising of wisdom is completely perfect. As it is said in the scriptures, "For all dharmas, the dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, has arisen." This is spoken with regard to the path of seeing. For the forbearance of dharma, it is without dust; for the knowledge of dharma, it is free from defilement. Because of complete knowledge and abandonment, the path is completely purified. As it is said in the scriptures, "Seeing the dharma, obtaining the dharma, knowing the dharma, realizing the dharma, transcending hesitation, transcending doubt, not relying on others, not being led away from the Teacher's teaching by others, obtaining fearlessness in all dharmas." This is also spoken with regard to the path of seeing. For the forbearance of dharma, it is seeing the dharma; for the knowledge of dharma, it is obtaining the dharma; for the subsequent forbearance, it is knowing the dharma; for the subsequent knowledge, it is realizing the dharma; all transcend the hesitation of what they have attained themselves; transcend the doubt of what others have attained; do not rely on others in cultivating the path; because they are not robbed by non-Buddhists, they are not led away from the Teacher's teaching by others. Obtaining fearlessness in all dharmas refers to the dharma of complete questioning and the dharma of prophecy, which are considered dharma here, because the mind is not timid, so fearlessness is obtained in it. What is the path of cultivation? It is the worldly path and the transcendental path that are higher than the path of seeing, the small path, the middle path, the great path, the path of joining, the path of no interruption, the path of liberation, and the path of distinction. What is the worldly path? It is the first dhyana, the second dhyana, the third dhyana, the fourth dhyana, the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. These dhyanas and formless absorptions should also be understood in terms of defilement, purification, establishment, and purity. What is defilement? It is the four unpredicted roots: craving, views, pride, and ignorance. Craving is the defilement of tasting flavors.

The earth is completely defiled by afflictions. Views are completely defiled by meditators who are dominated by views. Pride is completely defiled by meditators who are dominated by pride. Ignorance is completely defiled by meditators who are dominated by doubt. Thus, for those whose minds are completely defiled, afflictions and near afflictions that operate in the form and formless realms arise. What is purification like? Pure meditation and the formless realms are also called purification because they are virtuous. What is establishment like? By establishing the limbs, establishing the samadhi, establishing the measure, and establishing the names. What is the establishment of limbs like? The first dhyana has five limbs. The five limbs are: thought, examination, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The second dhyana has four limbs. The four limbs are: inner clarity, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The third dhyana has five limbs. The five limbs are: equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The fourth dhyana has four limbs. The four limbs are: pure equanimity, pure mindfulness, feeling of neither suffering nor happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. Because of the limb of antidote, the limb of benefit, and the limb of the nature of the place of both. In the formless realms, there is no establishment of limbs because of the single taste of peace. What is the establishment of samadhi like? With seven mental activities, one enters the first dhyana, and so on up to the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. What are the seven mental activities? The mental activity of thoroughly understanding the characteristics, the mental activity arising from aspiration, the mental activity arising from extreme solitude, the mental activity of gathering joy, the mental activity of examination, the end of practice, and the mental activity of the fruit of the end of practice. What is the establishment of measure like? In the first dhyana, one meditates on small, medium, and large.

has been fully cultivated. Just as with the first dhyana, so it is with the remaining dhyanas and the formless realms. In the first dhyana, the result of fully cultivating the small, medium, and large is the three birth places of the first dhyana. Just as with the first dhyana, so it is with the remaining dhyanas, the birth places of dhyana are of three kinds. In the formless realms, since there is no other dwelling place, there are no different birth places. There, by fully cultivating the small, medium, and large, in the formless realms, birth places appear as high, low, inferior, and good. If names are separately established, how is that? Whatever samadhi is included in the first dhyana, the names of those absorptions of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are not known even by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Just as what is included in the first dhyana, so it is with what is included in the remaining dhyanas and the formless realms, this is based on the perfection of dhyana. How is purity? What arises from the extreme limit, from the first dhyana up to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, is called purity. What is the path that transcends the world? The knowledge of suffering, origin, cessation, and path in the path of cultivation, that is, the aspects of the knowledge of dharma and subsequent knowledge, and the samadhi that is concordant with them, from the first dhyana up to the realm of nothingness. The realm of neither perception nor non-perception is worldly because the activity of consciousness is not completely clear, therefore it is called the signless. As the Blessed One said, "To the extent that there is absorption in perception, to that extent one fully knows," like that. The absorption of cessation is beyond the world, it is manifestly accomplished among people. Having manifestly accomplished it among people, it manifests among people or in the form realm. In the formless realms, this does not manifest, because those who abide in the fruition of peaceful liberation are
