If a male lay practitioner studies one aspect of the basis of training, is he called having the vows of a male lay practitioner, or not having them? When destroying the seeds of all the afflictions that arise from immoral conduct, abandoning desire by being free from attachment to desire, and being free from attachment to the first dhyana, and being free from attachment to the second dhyana, and abandoning desire by being free from attachment to the third dhyana. What is the discipline without outflows? What is abandoned by the non-outflow mind that sees the truth. What is non-discipline? What is non-discipline? Butchers, crow killers, those who live by pigs, fishermen, hunters, bird catchers, those who live by catching field mice, thieves, executioners, elephant catchers, those who live by snakes, prison guards, eavesdroppers, harm-doers, any of these people. Or born from these castes, or truly upheld, that is, determined to engage in these industries. What is neither discipline nor non-discipline? What is neither discipline nor non-discipline, whether virtuous or non-virtuous karma. What is the karma that will be experienced as happiness? The virtuous karma of the desire realm and the three dhyanas. What is the karma that will be experienced as suffering? What is non-virtuous karma. What is the karma that will be experienced as neither suffering nor happiness? The virtuous karma above the third dhyana. What is the karma to be experienced in the present life? All that matures in the present life, that is, the karma to be experienced in the present life, for example, benefiting others after rising from the samadhi of loving-kindness, and arising from harming others, and for the samadhi of loving-kindness, such as the samadhi without afflictions, and entering into cessation, and from the fruit of stream-entry, and from rising from the fruit of Arhat, and so on for the Sangha of monks such as the Buddha.
