These are possessed by the three. Combine them as they fit together. There are four kinds of clinging: clinging to desire, clinging to views, clinging to ethics and vows, and clinging to the assertion of self. The root of disputes is clinging; therefore, existence is also clinging, hence the clingings, etc. Regarding desire, there is attachment, adherence, bondage, complete adherence, and the cause of universal attachment, leading to disputes among householders and householders. The root of that dispute is the first. Regarding views, there is attachment, special adherence, bondage, complete adherence, and the cause of universal attachment, leading to disputes among renunciates and renunciates. The root of that dispute is the three clingings, namely, the sixty-two views are the clinging to views. Most of the ascetic practices and severe austerities, each different, are the clinging to ethics and vows. Their place, the view of the perishable aggregate, is the clinging to the assertion of self. The clinging to views and the clinging to ethics and vows cause disputes among non-Buddhists. The clinging to the assertion of self causes disputes among non-Buddhists and Buddhists. Thus, their clinging to the root of disputes, clinging, leads to clinging to existence in the future as well. Therefore, they are called clingings, etc. There are four knots: covetousness is a knot of the body, malice is a knot of the body, holding ethics and vows as supreme is a knot of the body, and holding and clinging to "this is true" is a knot of the body. The knots are to sever the nature of the mind in equipoise from the body. Thus, there are four causes of distraction: the mind is distracted by trivial matters, because disputes cannot be well handled, because of being in suffering due to severe ethics and vows, and because of thinking about objects of knowledge through improper attention, causing the mind to be distracted. There are five obscurations: the obscuration of desire for desire, harm

The obscurations are dullness, drowsiness, sleep, excitement, regret, and doubt. Because one cannot understand the virtuous side during the time of great joy in renunciation, the time of diligent accomplishment when encouraged, the time of tranquility, the time of grasping, and the time of equanimity, these are the obscurations. There are three stains: the stain of desire, the stain of hatred, and the stain of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, one engages in desire and so forth in the manner of previous habituation. Because this conduct is not abandoned, the mind becomes untamed and difficult to subdue; these are called stains. There are three defilements: the defilement of desire, the defilement of hatred, and the defilement of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, one especially practices the immoral conduct that is contrary to its nature. Whether one lives in a village or in a monastery, if the wise see one practicing celibacy, they will say, "This venerable one does such things and engages in such behavior; he is an impure thorn in the village." These are called defilements. There are three sins: the sin of desire, the sin of hatred, and the sin of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, one experiences birth and death for a long time; these are called sins. There are three thorns: the thorn of desire, the thorn of hatred, and the thorn of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, intense desire arises and remains for existence and the resources of existence, and one doubts the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, as well as suffering, origin, cessation, and path; these are called thorns. There are three "all": the "all" of desire, the "all" of hatred, and the "all" of ignorance. Relying on desire, hatred, and ignorance, one remains only with fear and dwells in much distraction; these are called "all". There are three wrong conducts: the wrong conduct of desire, the wrong conduct of hatred, and the wrong conduct of ignorance.
