Association, the association of pride, the association of ignorance, the association of views, the association of holding as supreme, the association of doubt, the association of jealousy, and the association of miserliness. The association of attachment is the desire of the three realms. Being associated with the association of attachment, one will not become disgusted with the three realms. Because one does not become disgusted, one engages in non-virtue and does not engage in virtue. Therefore, suffering will manifest in the next life, so it is associated with suffering. The association of anger is the mind's extreme torment towards sentient beings, suffering, and the dharmas that are the place of suffering. Being associated with the association of anger, one does not abandon the mind from the cause of anger, therefore one engages in non-virtue and does not engage in virtue. Therefore, suffering will manifest in the next life, so it is associated with suffering. The association of pride is the seven prides, namely pride, great pride, pride beyond pride, the pride of 'I am', manifest pride, slight pride, and wrong pride. What is pride? It is the mental conceit of thinking 'I am greater' than someone smaller, or thinking 'I am equal' to someone equal. What is great pride? It is the mental conceit of thinking 'I am greater' than someone equal, or thinking 'I am equal' to someone greater. What is pride beyond pride? It is the mental conceit of thinking 'I am much greater' than someone greater. What is the pride of 'I am'? It is the mental conceit of truly regarding the five aggregates of grasping as 'I' or 'mine'. What is manifest pride? It is the mental conceit of thinking 'I have attained' what one has not attained, namely a superior distinction. What is slight pride? It is the mental conceit of thinking 'I am only a little smaller' than someone extremely superior. What is wrong pride? It is the mental conceit of thinking 'I possess qualities' when one does not possess qualities. Being associated with the association of pride is clinging to 'I' and clinging to 'mine'.

Completely unaware. If completely unaware, one becomes attached to the notion of "I" and "mine," engaging in non-virtue and not engaging in virtue. Therefore, suffering will manifest in the future, and thus one is connected with suffering. The pervasive bond of ignorance is not knowing the three realms. Being connected with the pervasive bond of ignorance means being particularly attached to the nature of suffering and the nature of arising. Because one is particularly attached to these, one engages in non-virtue and does not engage in virtue. Therefore, suffering will manifest in the future, and thus one is connected with suffering. The pervasive bond of views is three views: the view of the aggregates, the view of extremes, and wrong views. Being connected with the pervasive bond of views means completely seeking liberation through wrong views. Manifest attachment. Because of manifest attachment to liberation through wrong views, one engages in non-virtue and does not engage in virtue. Therefore, suffering will manifest in the future, and thus one is connected with suffering. The pervasive bond of holding as supreme is holding views as supreme, as well as holding discipline and asceticism as supreme. Being connected with the pervasive bond of holding as supreme means manifesting attachment to the means of liberation through wrong views, so one engages in non-virtue and does not engage in virtue. Therefore, suffering will manifest in the future, and thus one is connected with suffering. The pervasive bond of doubt is having doubts about the truths. Being connected with the pervasive bond of doubt means doubting the Buddha Jewel, and doubting the Dharma Jewel and the Sangha Jewel. Because one doubts the Jewels, one will not cultivate well. Because one does not cultivate the Jewels well, one engages in non-virtue and does not engage in virtue. Therefore, suffering will manifest in the future, and thus one is connected with the Buddha. The pervasive bond of jealousy is because one is particularly attached to gain and respect, one cannot tolerate the prosperity of others, and one's mind is disturbed from within. Being connected with the pervasive bond of jealousy means cherishing gain and respect, but not cherishing the Dharma. Because one cherishes gain and respect, one engages in non-virtue.
