What is its nature? There are three destroyers: fire, water, and wind. When destroyed, there are three that are included: the second dhyana, the third, and the fourth. In the fourth dhyana, the immeasurable mansions arise together and cease together, thus they are destroyed and formed. There are three intermediate kalpas: the intermediate kalpa of famine, the intermediate kalpa of disease, and the intermediate kalpa of weapons. These cause the kalpa to come to an end. One decreasing intermediate kalpa, eighteen increasing and decreasing kalpas, and one increasing kalpa, for a total of twenty intermediate kalpas the world is destroyed. For twenty intermediate kalpas the world remains destroyed. For twenty intermediate kalpas the world is formed. For twenty intermediate kalpas the world remains formed after being formed. These are eighty intermediate kalpas, which is one great kalpa. By this method of counting kalpas, the lifespan of those who abide in the form realm and the gods who abide in the formless realm can be measured. When the lifespan of these beings is exhausted, their merit is exhausted, and their karma is also exhausted, they die from that place and are reborn. What is it like when lifespan is exhausted? It is when the time of death arrives. What is it like when merit is exhausted? It is dying before the time, for example, these beings exhaust their merit by savoring the taste of meditative absorption, therefore they die even before the time. What is it like when karma is exhausted? It is when the karma that will be experienced after being born there, and the karma that will be experienced in other instances, is completely exhausted. What is the nature of suffering? The three sufferings and the eight types of suffering are called suffering. Why is it said that whatever is impermanent is suffering? Impermanence itself belongs to two
