If we examine what is relied upon, what is it? Relying on the nature of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, especially clinging to those who possess desirable qualities, is its very nature. Being associated with it, bound by it, following it, conforming to it, and arising from its cause, therefore, clinging is regarded as reliance. As much as there is attachment to things with defilements, that much is the reliance. It is to abandon the manifest clinging that is possessed with self-clinging. How is manifest arising a reliance? How many are the manifest arising reliances? Why examine manifest arising as reliance? The opposite of clinging reliance is manifest arising reliance. As much as there is freedom from defilements, that much is the manifest arising reliance. It is to abandon manifest clinging that is free from self-clinging. How is it conditioned? How many are the conditioned things? Why examine as conditioned? Whatever appears to have arising, ceasing, abiding, and changing, that is regarded as conditioned. Except for the realm of Dharma and one aspect of the sources of arising, all are conditioned. It is to abandon manifest clinging to the impermanence of self. How is it unconditioned? How many are the unconditioned things? Why examine as unconditioned? The opposite of conditioned is unconditioned. The realm of Dharma and one aspect of the sources of arising. It is to abandon manifest clinging to the permanence of self. Are those that are not the aggregates of appropriation called conditioned or unconditioned? Answer: They are called neither conditioned nor unconditioned. Why is that? Because they are not manifestly accumulated by actions and afflictions, therefore they are not conditioned. Because of the nature of manifestly tending towards and turning away according to desire, therefore they are also not unconditioned. How are these two, the conditioned and the unconditioned, as spoken by the Blessed One? By whatever meaning something becomes conditioned, by that meaning it is not unconditioned. By whatever meaning something becomes unconditioned, that meaning itself is not conditioned. This principle should be examined in this way. Second Chapter. How is it worldly?

What is it? What are the mundane things? Why examine the mundane? Belonging to the three realms, and the appearance after attaining the supramundane are also mundane. It is one aspect of the aggregates, fifteen realms, ten sense bases, three realms, and one aspect of the two sense bases. It is to abandon attachment to the appearance of self in the mundane. How is it supramundane? What are the supramundane things? Why examine the supramundane? The antidote to the three realms, non-conceptualization, is supramundane, because it is non-conceptualization of non-inversion and non-proliferation. Also, in another way, it is also what is attained after the supramundane, because it relies on the supramundane. It is one aspect of the aggregates, three realms, and two sense bases. It is to abandon attachment to the mere appearance of self. How does arising occur? What are the arising things? Why examine arising? What has arisen in the past and present is arising. It is one aspect of everything. It is to abandon attachment to the non-permanence of self. Also, there are twenty-four kinds of arising, namely: first arising, continuous arising, arising from increase, dependent arising, change arising, complete maturation arising, decay arising, special arising, luminous arising, non-luminous arising, universally moving arising, arising with seeds, arising without seeds, arising for the sake of image and freedom and definite indication, arising from one to one, arising from momentary destruction, arising from meeting and separation, other states arising, death and birth arising, destruction and formation arising, arising in the past, arising at the time of death, arising in between, arising at the time of self-connection. How does non-arising occur? What are the non-arising things? Why examine non-arising? The future and the unconditioned are non-arising. It is one aspect of everything. It is to abandon the appearance of permanence in self.
