Or, the characteristic of example is that the alaya-vijñana is like illusion, mirage, dream, and cataract. If it does not exist, then the cause of perversion arising from the seeds of unreal discrimination cannot be established. Also, the characteristics of being all-encompassing and not all-encompassing: for those who possess all bondages, it is the characteristic of being all-encompassing. For those who are free from worldly desires, it is the characteristic of being diminished. For śrāvakas and bodhisattvas in training, it is the characteristic of having eliminated one aspect. For arhats, pratyekabuddhas, and tathāgatas, it is the characteristic of having eliminated all obscurations of afflictions. The characteristic of having eliminated all obscurations of afflictions and knowledge should be applied accordingly. If it does not exist, then it is impossible to gradually reverse afflictions from all aspects. Why is it said that the vipāka of virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas is the vipāka that is unconditioned and indeterminate? Because what is unconditioned and indeterminate is not contradictory to virtue and non-virtue, while virtue and non-virtue are mutually contradictory. If vipāka also becomes virtuous and non-virtuous, then it is impossible to reverse afflictions from all aspects. Therefore, the consciousness of vipāka is precisely unconditioned and indeterminate. The explanation of the knowable realm is complete. Chapter Two. How should the characteristics of the knowable be examined? In brief, there are three aspects: the dependent nature (paratantra-lakṣaṇa), the completely imputed nature (parikalpita-lakṣaṇa), and the thoroughly established nature (pariniṣpanna-lakṣaṇa). Among these, what is the dependent nature? It is the consciousness that possesses the seeds of the alaya-vijñana and is sustained by unreal discrimination. And what is that? It is the body and the embodied, as well as the profound consciousness, and the consciousness that should be closely associated with it, and the consciousness that is closely associated with it, and the consciousness of time, and the consciousness of number, and the consciousness of place, and the consciousness of terminology, and the consciousness of the distinction between self and other, and the consciousness of good and bad destinies, and the consciousness of death, transmigration, and birth.

Regarding this, the consciousness of body, beings with bodies, and the profound, as well as the consciousness that should be approached by it, and the consciousness that approaches it, as well as the consciousness of time, number, place, and name, these arise from the seeds of habitual expressions. The consciousness of the difference between self and others arises from the seeds of the habit of viewing as self. The consciousness of good and bad destinies, as well as death and birth, arises from the seeds of the habit of the limbs of existence. These consciousnesses encompass all realms, beings, and birthplaces, revealing the nature of other-dependence, which is the non-true, completely conceptualized. The mere consciousness of these consciousnesses, which is not true, contained by complete conceptualization, is non-existent, and is the place where erroneous meanings appear, this is the nature of other-dependence. So, what is the nature of complete conceptualization? It is that which is meaningless, yet mere consciousness itself appears as meaning. So, what is the nature of perfect accomplishment? It is that in the very nature of other-dependence, the nature of meaning is completely non-existent. Regarding this, the consciousness of body, beings with bodies, and eaters should be understood as the six internal realms such as the eye. The consciousness that should be approached by it should be understood as the six external realms such as form. The consciousness that approaches it should be understood as the six realms such as eye consciousness. The remaining consciousnesses should be understood as the various classifications of these consciousnesses. These consciousnesses are called mere consciousness because they are meaningless, what example is there for this? Dreams and so on should be taken as examples. For example, in a dream, although there is no meaning, but merely consciousness, it appears as various meaningful images of form, sound, smell, taste, touch, houses, forests, land, and mountains, but there is no meaning there. Through this example, it should be understood as mere consciousness everywhere. And so on.
