Because the distinctions of experiencing birth, aging, and death are immeasurable. How do these consciousnesses abide in the nature of mere consciousness? In short, there are three ways: merely as it is, because it is meaningless; secondly, because consciousness has causes, reasons, and views; various things arise simultaneously, because various appearances arise. Therefore, all these consciousnesses are meaningless, so it is merely itself. The consciousnesses of the eye, etc., form, etc., are the cause; their consciousness is the view, until the body's consciousness is the view, these all have causes and views. Mind consciousness is the cause of all consciousnesses from the eye, etc., up to the Dharma; the consciousness of mind consciousness has a view, because mind consciousness is discrimination and is produced by all appearances of consciousness. Here is a verse: Merely itself, the second and the various, yogis want to understand. Those who enter the mind-only, if separated from it, then return to it again. Some think that the mind consciousness itself arises from that support and obtains the name of that support, just as thinking is called the karma of body and speech. Arising in all supports, appearing as two in various forms, that is because it appears as merely the thing itself, and appears as discrimination. In the realm of form, mind consciousness abides in the body. Just as other form sense faculties abide in the body, in all places it also appears to grasp touch. Here is a verse: Whoever has no body, dwells in a cave, goes far away, wanders alone, tames the difficult to tame mind, I call him a Brahmin. Also, the objects of the five sense faculties are experienced by the mind, the mind is their guide, as it is said. Also, in the twelve sources that are taught, the six aggregates of consciousness are the mind source, as it is said. Wherever, the nature of the alaya consciousness

Consciousness is established as the cognition of an object, and again, all other cognitions are cognitions of its cause. The cognition of mental consciousness, together with its basis, should be understood as its view. Those cognitions that have become causes are the causes of the arising of that view, so when they appear as real objects, they perform the function of being the basis for their arising. Thus, these cognitions abide only in the nature of consciousness. How then should one view that which appears as an object as also being without nature? The Blessed One said, "If a Bodhisattva possesses four qualities, he will realize that all cognitions are without object." That is, by knowing the cause of dissimilar consciousness, for example, ghosts, animals, humans, and gods see different cognitions of the same object. And by the object of objectless consciousness, for example, the objects of the past, future, dreams, and images. And by knowing that which transforms without effort and without reversal, that is, if there is an object, then the consciousness that focuses on the object knows that nature without effort, so it transforms without reversal. By knowing that consciousness is in accordance with the three aspects, that is, for example, Bodhisattvas and meditators who have attained mastery over their minds, due to the power of faith, those objects appear in that way. And for yogis who have attained tranquility and are diligent in the higher vision of the Dharma, objects appear only as mental fabrications. And for those who have attained non-conceptual wisdom and abide in it, all objects do not appear, as it is said. Thus, the cognition of objects is in accordance with the three aspects, and by the aforementioned reasoning, the absence of objects is established. Here are the verses: Ghosts, animals, humans, and, Gods, according to their respective classes, Because one object has different minds, Therefore, it is asserted that objects are not established. The past and so on, as well as dreams, And the two aspects of images, Because there is no object of focus, Therefore, it is reasonable to focus on them. If an object is established as an object, Consciousness will not transform without discrimination, Because without that, this
