Fruits are born in different races, done and undone, fears and encounters, because of faults and contradictions. The inner is the condition of the outer, thus it is the basis of habits. Moreover, any other entering consciousness should be regarded as one who closely engages in the body and all actions. In the verses of Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, it is said: One is the consciousness of condition, the second is the one who closely engages. Close engagement and complete cutting off, its entering action arises from the mind. As it is said. Those two consciousnesses are the condition of one another, as the Dharma Treasury Sutra says: All dharmas are associated with consciousness, and they are also the same in that way. They are always associated with the objects of fruit and the objects of cause. Thus the verses are spoken. If in the first limb of dependent origination, those consciousnesses are mutually the cause and condition, then what is said to be the condition in the second limb of dependent origination? It is the condition of the lord. Furthermore, by what condition do the six consciousnesses arise? They arise from the lord, the object, and the immediately preceding condition. The three types of dependent origination, the cyclical existence, the one who goes to desire and non-desire, and the condition of the one who closely engages are these four. This is the establishment of the Alaya consciousness by name and characteristic. How is it that the Alaya consciousness itself is shown by these names, and likewise, how does it appear that the characteristic is also shown, but the entering consciousness is not? If there is no Alaya consciousness established in this way, then pervasive defilement and pervasive purification are not possible. Also, the pervasive defilement of afflictions, the pervasive defilement of karma, and the pervasive defilement of birth are not possible. The pervasive purification of the mundane and the supramundane are also not possible. How is the pervasive defilement of afflictions not possible? In this way, the seeds of habits made by afflictions and near afflictions are not possible in the six aggregates of consciousness, such as the attachment of eye consciousness, etc.

Afflictions and near afflictions, whatever arises and ceases together with them, it is on the substance of the seeds of those that habits are imprinted, but not on others. When eye consciousness ceases, interrupted by other consciousness, there is no habit on that, and the place of habit is also not found, because the previously ceased eye consciousness is non-existent, being interrupted by other consciousness. From that non-existent past, it is impossible for things like desire to arise, just as the ripening fruit arises from past actions. It is also not possible for the eye consciousness that arises together with desire and the like to have habits. For the time being, it is not for desire, because desire depends on it and does not depend on it. It is also not for other consciousnesses, because the places of consciousnesses are different, and there is no arising and ceasing together. It is also not for one's own substance, because one's own substance is without arising and ceasing together. Therefore, it is not possible for afflictions and near afflictions such as desire to imprint habits on eye consciousness. It is also not possible for that consciousness to be imprinted by consciousness, just as with eye consciousness, the remaining consciousnesses should also be understood accordingly. Furthermore, when beings die from the higher realm of the unconscious and are reborn here, the consciousness of those beings is defiled by afflictions and near afflictions, and that first moment of arising will also arise without seeds, because the habit, together with its place, has passed away and is non-existent. If the antidote consciousness to afflictions arises, then all other mundane consciousnesses that are different from it cease. If there is no alaya consciousness, then that antidote consciousness cannot have the seeds of afflictions and near afflictions, because it is liberated by its very nature and does not arise and cease together with afflictions and the like. If there is no alaya consciousness, then when the consciousness that enters after that arises, the habit, together with its place, has passed away,
