The way of establishing it. Among them, the self-nature of the ālaya-vijñāna is that which, relying on the habitual tendencies of all pervasively afflicted dharmas, possesses the nature of completely holding seeds, and is the causal nature of their arising. Among them, the characteristic of being a cause is that the self-nature of the ālaya-vijñāna, which is all dharmas, constantly abides as the causal nature of those very pervasively afflicted dharmas. Among them, the very establishment as the nature of a result is that the ālaya-vijñāna arises from the beginningless habitual tendencies of those very pervasively afflicted dharmas. What is a habitual tendency? What is meant by the term 'habitual tendency'? What is to be expressed by this term? It is to be expressed as that which is the causal nature of the arising of that which arises simultaneously with the dharma and relies on its cessation. For example, sesame seeds that have been scented with flowers: the sesame seeds and flowers arise and cease together, but the sesame seeds become the causal nature of the arising of that other fragrance. Also, for those who engage in desire and so forth, the habitual tendencies of desire and so forth arise and cease together with desire and so forth, but the mind is the causal nature of that. Also, for those who have heard much, the habitual tendencies of having heard much also arise and cease together with attending to that which has been heard, but the mind becomes the causal nature of its expression. Just as it is said that the dharma is grasped by the habitual tendency, the ālaya-vijñāna should also be viewed in the same way. In the ālaya-vijñāna, are those seeds of the pervasively afflicted dharmas separate and distinct? Or do they abide as non-distinct? In this regard, those that abide are neither substantially distinct nor non-distinct, but the ālaya-vijñāna, which has the distinction of the power of their arising, arises in that way, and is therefore called the all-seed. How should the ālaya-vijñāna and those pervasively afflicted dharmas be viewed as simultaneously becoming one cause and transforming into one? For example, the arising of the flame of a lamp and the burning of the wick are simultaneous with each other. Also, just as the beams of a house rely on one and do not collapse simultaneously, so here too, it is the causal nature of one.

It should be regarded as one. Just as the ālaya-vijñāna is the cause of all pervasively afflicted dharmas, similarly, all pervasively afflicted dharmas are also established as the causal condition of the ālaya-vijñāna, because no other causal condition can be ascertained. If the latent impressions are not different and not diverse, how can different and diverse dharmas become the cause? For example, when dyeing with various madder dyes, the cloth does not appear in various colors, but when it is put into a dye vat, the cloth shows various distinct colors. Similarly, the ālaya-vijñāna, which is imbued with various latent impressions, is not diverse when the latent impressions are present, but when it manifests its result, like being put into a dye vat, it shows countless dharmas. This is the extremely subtle and profound dependent arising in the Mahāyāna. In short, there are two types of dependent arising: the differentiation of own-being and the differentiation of suffering and happiness. Among them, the dharmas that arise in dependence on the ālaya-vijñāna are the differentiation of own-being, because they become the object of the cause that differentiates various own-beings. The twelve links of dependent arising are the differentiation of suffering and happiness, because they become the object of the cause that differentiates various bodies of suffering and happiness in the good and bad destinies. Regarding the first dependent arising, the ālaya-vijñāna, some ignorant people think that it arises from the cause of nature, some think that it arises from the cause of previous actions, some think that it arises from the cause emanated by Īśvara, some think that it arises from the cause of self, and some think that it is without cause and without condition. Those who are confused about the second dependent arising think of the self as the agent and the enjoyer. For example, there are many blind people who have never seen an elephant, and someone shows them an elephant.

Some of them touched the elephant's trunk, some touched the tusk, some touched the ear, some touched the leg, some touched the tail, some touched the spine, and when they were asked what the elephant was like, some said it was like a plow, some said it was like a pestle, some said it was like a winnowing basket, some said it was like the base of a pestle, some said it was like a broom, some said it was like a stone. Similarly, here, those who do not understand this dual dependent origination, like blind people blinded by ignorance, regarding the nature of the alaya-vijñana, which is like an elephant, and those who do not understand cause and effect, some think that nature is the cause itself, some think that it arises from previously done causes, some think that it is created by Ishvara, some think that it has a self, some think that it arises from no cause, some think that it is the agent, some think that it is the eater. In short, the nature of the alaya-vijñana is all the seeds of the vipaka-vijñana, which encompasses all the bodies of the three realms and all beings. Here is a verse, about outer and inner and non-obvious, the two and the conventional truth, and the ultimate truth, all of these are considered to be six kinds of seeds. Momentary and simultaneous arising, that is considered to be continuously arising, definite and dependent on conditions, and proven by its own fruit. The dependent, the unstated, the to-be-taught, as the intermediary and connection of the door, as the agent of the door, it is not other than that, that is the characteristic of habit. There is no connection between these six, because they are related to three different ones. Because there is no moment and simultaneity, if it is done to the lineage, it will become other. The outer and inner seeds, are considered to be produced and projected. Because unplanted death will project, just as the arrow will not fall in the middle. Just as the outer seeds, the seeds of the inner ones are not like that, the verse: Are the outer seeds not planted? It is not the inner desire, if there are no habits of hearing etc., then.
