Therefore, based on what intention did the Blessed One say "belonging to both"? In the nature of dependence on others, there is the nature of complete imputation, which belongs to complete defilement. The nature of perfect accomplishment exists, which belongs to complete purification. Dependence on others itself belongs to both. It was said based on this intention. What example is there for this meaning? The example is that there is gold in the ground. For example, when there is gold in the ground, the element of earth, earth, and gold can be distinguished. Among them, for the element of earth, the earth without gold can be distinguished, but the existing gold cannot be distinguished. In this way, after being burned by fire, the earth does not appear, but the gold appears. When the element of earth appears as earth, it appears reversed. When it appears as gold, it appears as it is. Therefore, the element of earth belongs to both. Similarly, for consciousness, if it is not touched by the fire of non-discriminating wisdom, then consciousness appears as the unreal, completely imputed nature, and does not appear as the real, perfectly accomplished nature. If consciousness is touched by the fire of non-discriminating wisdom, then consciousness appears as the real, perfectly accomplished nature, and does not appear as the false, completely imputed nature. Therefore, with the unreal, completely imputed consciousness, the nature of dependence on others belongs to both, just like the element of earth when there is gold in the ground. In some places, the Blessed One said, "All dharmas are permanent," in some places he said, "are impermanent," and in some places he said, "are neither permanent nor impermanent." Based on what intention did he say "are permanent"? In the nature of dependence on others, the part of perfect accomplishment is permanent. The part of the nature of complete imputation is impermanent. It was said based on the fact that neither is permanent nor impermanent. Just as permanence and impermanence are not two, happiness and suffering are also not two, good and non-good are also not two, emptiness and non-emptiness are also not two, self and non-self are also not two, peace and non-peace are also not two.

are inseparable; intrinsic existence and intrinsic non-existence are inseparable; arising and non-arising are inseparable; cessation and non-cessation are inseparable; primordially pacified and primordially non-pacified are inseparable; naturally in nirvāṇa and naturally not in nirvāṇa are inseparable; and even saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are inseparable. All the hidden meanings of the buddhas, the bhagavāns, with their various distinctions such as these, should be understood as the three intrinsic natures, just as the categories of permanence and impermanence and so forth are established. Here, in verse: How are all dharmas non-existent, and how do they appear in many forms? Likewise, dharma and non-dharma are taught as being of one meaning, without duality. Sometimes they are thoroughly taught as being non-existent, and sometimes as existent. The nature of both is not existent, and he taught that it is not non-existent either. Just as it appears, so it is non-existent; therefore, he taught that it is non-existent. Since it appears in that way, therefore, he taught that it is existent. Since there is no self and no self-nature, since it does not abide in its own entity, and since it is not there as it is apprehended, it is regarded as being without intrinsic nature. Through the absence of intrinsic nature, by relying on each subsequent one, the unborn, the unceasing, the primordially pacified, and the naturally in nirvāṇa are accomplished. Furthermore, all the words of the Buddha should be understood through the four ways of understanding: according to the meaning, and hiddenly. Understanding according to equality is like this: “Now, at that time, at that moment, the tathāgata, arhat, perfectly complete buddha became the seer.” Understanding according to a different time is like this: “By holding the name of the tathāgata Ratnakara, one will definitely become certain to attain unsurpassable, perfectly complete enlightenment,” and “Just by making aspirations, one will be born in the happy realm,” and so forth, as it is said. Understanding according to a different meaning is like this: “If one serves and honors as many buddhas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, one will understand the meaning of the dharma of the Great Vehicle,” as it is said. Understanding according to the intention of the individual is
