It is not so. Thus, for the time being, having fully matured sentient beings in the three vehicles of inner knowledge, one should also know that it is necessary to accomplish the purpose of expounding the Buddha's teachings. In short, the three types of Bodhisattvas seek to hear, namely, abiding in great reverence, as well as perfect approach, and perfect hearing. Among them, with regard to the first case, it is said: Abiding in great reverence, and so on. Among them, "great" is intense. "Reverence" is the cause of obtaining merit, that is, because one sees the great meaning, benefit, and merit of the Dharma. Because it is in accordance with the antidote to all defilements and purifications, it is called well-spoken. Well-spoken is also it, it is a synonym. Or, because it has become the antidote to all defilements, it is well-spoken. Because it is beneficial to purification, it is well-spoken. Such a principle should also be understood by following the sutras. In this way, because one has extremely prudent wisdom, one dwells more diligently in seeking the holy Dharma. Day and night, one takes listening to the Dharma as the main task. In order to seek the Buddha's Dharma, one develops joy in the Dharma, does not know satisfaction, and continues without interruption. One rejoices and delights in the Dharma, and also enters deeply into the Dharma. One is devoted to the Dharma, inclines to the Dharma, and abides in the Dharma. One relies on the Dharma, seeks the protection of the Dharma, and seeks the power of the Dharma. One takes the Dharma as the main task and strives in the Dharma. In this way, because one strives in seeking the Dharma, there is nothing that one does not completely abandon, whether it is jewels, or wealth, or property, grain, storehouses, warehouses, and so on. Towards the speaker of the Dharma, one only generates the thought of being difficult to obtain, and abides in this, but one does not generate the thought of being difficult to obtain at all towards others. For the sake of the Dharma, there is nothing that one will not abandon with regard to external objects. With regard to internal objects,

For example, completely giving away servants, or completely giving away the kingdom, or completely giving away possessions, or wealth, grain, jewels, gold, treasuries, and storehouses, or completely giving away horses, elephants, and vehicles, or completely giving away precious ornaments and fluttering banners, or completely giving away wives, sons, and daughters, or completely giving away the head, hands, feet, and the essence of the limbs, or even completely giving away the entire body, there is nothing that is not given away for the sake of the Dharma. Whatever is done in service and offering to the Guru, there is nothing that is not accepted. Completely abandoning pride and excessive pride, acting without pride, whatever is done, there is nothing that is not accepted. Whatever harm to the body, there is nothing that is not accepted. Hearing a single word of the Dharma that has not been heard before is considered very meaningful, but obtaining a pile of jewels filling the entire three-thousand great-thousand world is not like that. Hearing a single verse of well-spoken words brings joy to the heart, but obtaining the kingdom of Indra, Brahma, and the Wheel-Turning King, and remaining in it for hundreds of thousands of eons is not like that. If someone were to say, 'If you can throw your body into a great pit of fire and experience a great mass of painful sensations with your own body, then I will explain to you the perfectly complete words of the Dharma taught by the Buddha, the practice of the Bodhisattva, which is the method of complete cultivation,' then that person should think, 'For the sake of the perfectly complete words of the Dharma spoken by the Buddha, for the sake of cultivating the practice of the Bodhisattva, even if the three-thousand great-thousand world is filled with fire, I would be willing to abandon myself from the realm of Brahma.' Thus it is said. In short, in order to be respectful and diligent from the outside in, it is said: 'Even in the midst of heat and burning,' and so on. Just as one acts for the sake of the Dharma, similarly, with whatever material possessions of my body, for the sake of the Dharma and all sentient beings.
