Sāpala. Cause and condition are cause and condition. The fruit arises in accordance with the cause, and this is called the cause. Because it arises from these, it is called the condition, because it possesses its own combination. The cause of the method is also, according to circumstances, the condition of the master, but not all of it. Mind and mental factors, completely grasped by the object, arise and enter similarly at the time of manifestation, and so it is at the time of dissimilar manifestation. Because these possess the object and possess the aspect, therefore it is called the object condition. Therefore, it itself is also called the immediate condition, because it arises simultaneously and enters with the same nature. It is determined from the four minds and mental factors. The cause that completely grasps in this way is to be known as two conditions. All the causes previously mentioned are included, as well as afflictions and purification, and the crops of worldly beings, etc. In order to show these meanings, it is said: How do all worldly things arise? Until how does purification arise? In order to show how external things arise from ten causes according to circumstances, it is said: Like this, in the world, belonging to the category of grains, and so on. In order to say that the name of the crops is called grain, it is said: Expressed in words in various ways, it itself is what holds the place, so it is called grain, because worldly beings use these names to call it, so it is called the cause of name. Their enjoyment is of two kinds: not separated from desire and separated from desire. Among them, those separated from desire depend on four ways. Those who are not separated from desire also have craving for food. Among them, desire refers to the manifest desire for food and so on. Seeking refers to striving for all means to obtain it. Taking refers to obtaining. When the obtained things enter the stomach from the mouth and nose and are enjoyed,

is to enjoy. In this way, grains have five functions, so they are called dependent causes. They are necessarily born from their own causes, so they are called producing causes. They have a common function, so they are called sustaining causes. After the seed, a sprout arises, which is the manifest cause. The continuum of sprouts, etc., has the cause of transforming into other states, and produces fruit with the distinction of complete transformation, which is the guiding cause. From undifferentiated seeds, individually determined fruits arise, which are individually determined causes. Just as it is for grains, so it should be understood for trees and grasses. These causes gather together and produce an effect, which is the co-operative cause. Hailstorms and crop diseases hinder their growth, which are unfavorable causes. Being free from these is the cause of no unfavorable conditions. How do the three kinds of afflictions become ten causes? In order to combine them oneself, it is said: Afflictions, etc. Because craving goes first, all afflictions will arise, it is said that it is caused by experiencing the taste of objects. The later existence produced by the seeds of ignorance, etc., has the producing cause of aging and death, which is included in future births. How do ignorance, etc., become sustaining causes? The seed immediately manifests the fruit, so it is called the manifest cause. Ignorance, etc., themselves have the limbs of each other in succession, and are the guiding causes of guiding future births and aging and death. Ignorance, etc., are separately determined as the causes of the five destinies, which are separately determined causes. All of these gather together and produce an effect, which is the co-operative cause. In order to show what is the cause of liberation, it is the unfavorable cause of afflictions, so it is said: Having lineage, etc. The cause of liberation

Separation from (afflictions) is the cause that is not contrary to all afflictions. To show this reason, it is said: Those very dharmas that have been shown, etc. How do the ten causes of purification, according to their categories, become the cause of placement, the cause of arising, and the cause of attainment? To show this reason, it is said: Among them, purification, etc. There are two kinds of purification, because it is the cause of purification. The path is also called purification, because whatever mindfulness, etc., can purify it, it is called purification. For what reason is it said: All the dharmas of the aspect of purification, etc. The fruit of purification is also called purification, because it will be purified here. For what reason is it said: Cessation, nirvana, etc. Like this, it is temporarily the cause of placement. To show that these causes can place purification, can be well established, and can determine conduct, it is said: Whatever can be spoken, etc. The nature of the three inversions of all afflictions is spoken in terms of what is called purification in name: Ignorance ceases, etc. Observing the faults of actions, etc., actions are the five aggregates and four aggregates that are appropriately accepted in the three realms. One should know. Having truly seen the aspect of its faults, because of observing that fault, with a mind of weariness, aversion arises towards samsara, and the mind desires nirvana. From the beginning of generating the roots of virtue corresponding to the aspect of liberation, until it is completely matured, it is called seeking purification. Because the distinction of complete maturity has been obtained, cultivating the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment is called completely holding purification. Like this, having the cultivation of the path, by this one can perfect the four fruits, which is called completely accomplishing purification. Entering these three kinds of purification is also what was said before.
