Thus I say. These three dharmas are spoken of in terms of their function of mutually illuminating things, so they are called the cause of subsequent designation, or subsequent designation itself is the cause, because it is the cause of the consciousness that possesses that object. Because it is a cause in dependence, it is a dependent cause, because action depends on the agent. What is meant by 'depending on what' is to indicate its meaning. What is meant by 'cause arising from what' means arising from its existence. Having first explained the cause of bodily action, and also in order to explain that mental action is also the cause of bodily action, it is said, 'Desire and taking will be like this.' In order to explain that example, it is said, 'For example, like this,' and so on. Thus, for the time being, an example of the aspect of bodily action is explained, but in reality, mental action should also be understood. What depends on the hand and arises from the cause of the hand is the action of taking, and so on. In this way, it should be understood that the characteristics of those two causes are explained. In order to explain the establishment of cause by the difference of state, it is said, 'Among them, the seed is,' and so on. From the proximity of fields, water, and seeds, etc., from sprouts, etc., to flowers, etc., the growth up to the fruit is the cause of complete holding. The seed is the cause of projection, because that seed, through the continuity of sprouts, etc., gradually establishes the ability to produce something similar to its own nature. Because from such a continuum, the distinction of complete ripening arises, fruit will arise after the flower. Like that, holding by the combination of continuum is the cause of that fruit, so it is called the projected fruit. The conditions of fields and water, etc., are the cause of the complete holding of the fruit, because everything makes that fruit completely held, so it is said. That seed itself is its own fruit, it is the cause of the manifestation of the sprout, this is the meaning, because after that it will be born, so it is said. Manifestation means new. Accomplishment means all.

It means the initial accomplishment. The fruit manifestly accomplished by the seed refers to the sprout. What is cast by the seed refers to the later fruits. It is the cause that brings forth its own later fruits, because it gradually brings forth that fruit. Although it is true that causes and fruits are different in kind, it is not the case that everything arises from everything. So how does it arise? It arises from individually determined causes, which are called individually determined causes. The powers of different dharmas are also different, so that they can produce fruits that are in accordance with themselves. Causes and conditions are subject to others, conditioned dharmas are devoid of action, and all those that gather together and accomplish action are called the co-operative cause. Obstructing arising means that because it obstructs, it is related to obstructing arising, which means that it is called the cause that is contrary to being individually determined. Being free from the obstructing cause is the non-discordant cause. Whatever manifest cause is also the non-discordant cause, but it is not merely non-existent, because non-existence cannot be established as a cause. That is also because it is not decayed at that time and becomes capable, and it can be obtained by distinguishing and establishing. Being contrary to this and making this unclear is therefore discordant. Discord itself becomes the cause, which is the discordant cause. In order to emphatically show the arising of discord by relying on the discordant cause, it is said, in short, there are six kinds, that is, the words themselves are discordant, which is verbal discord. Being contrary to reason, arising, discord, co-existing discord, incompatible discord, and discord between the discordant side and the opposing side. Among them, being contrary to one's own words is verbal discord, that is, the former and latter parts of that word are inconsistent. For example, my father practiced celibacy from a young age, and so on.

To explain that there are many inconsistencies between the earlier and later parts of the treatises on playful conduct, it is said: Some ascetics and Brahmins, and so on. When establishing the meaning to be proven well with reasoning, any reasoning that is included in the three valid cognitions, that is closely placed, and that has faults such as incompleteness, is called contradictory to reasoning. If things arise from the aggregation and non-aggregation of two limbs, and one of those is missing, it is called contradictory to arising. Light and darkness are also contradictory and cannot coexist, because their functions are different. The function of darkness is to obscure, while the function of light is to show clarity. Desire and hatred have the aspect of joy and dejection. Pleasure and pain have the aspect of wanting to accept and reject. The killer and the killed are incompatible contradictions. To explain other things that have become enemies to each other, it is said: Attacking each other, and so on. Of the two, if one is cultivated excessively, the other will be abandoned, or it will become an obstacle to arising, which is called incompatibility and incompatibility in terms of antidotes. In terms of specific antidotes, the example is the contemplation of impurity and so on. In terms of general antidotes, the example is the limbs of enlightenment and the eightfold path. The meaning of In this case, in terms of cause, that meaning itself is the reason. After explaining in detail in this way, to summarize and briefly explain, it is said: Also, all these causes are, and so on. Among the many causes, whichever is similar to which produces the result is called the producing cause, because it is a unique difference, and its result is well-known. All others are merely causes that help by completely holding, because they do not arise without them, so they are causes of means. To explain that these causes themselves are established as four conditions, it is said: Whatever is the producing cause is, and so on.
