The ground means to ascertain the meaning of the doctrines heard by means of four kinds of reasoning. The wisdom arising from thought, the small one is the direct realization of the meaning, the medium one is the universal examination, and the large one is the determination. Furthermore, not contradicting the former and the latter is the direct realization of the meaning, not contradicting the reasoning is the universal examination, and not being able to be overwhelmed by all opposing sides is the determination. Also, the intention to teach, the intention to decide, the intention to reveal darkness and the intention to reveal greatness, and the three words of the order as taught should be understood in sequence. When the mind is agitated or suspected of agitation, the characteristics of calm abiding should be taken. Again, that should be understood in three ways, namely calm abiding, the object of calm abiding, and the cause of calm abiding. Among these, calm abiding itself is called the characteristic of calm abiding, like the characteristics of form and so on. Focusing on the cause of calm abiding and paying attention is called focusing on calm abiding, which is the second characteristic. Definitely relying on the assembly of calm abiding is the third. When the mind is sinking or suspected of sinking, the characteristics of extremely joyful objects should also be observed in the same way here. Having attained the state of equanimity of mind, entering naturally, that is, abiding in equanimity without seeking, is the third characteristic. Taking such characteristics, and during the time of calm abiding, during the time of insight, and during the time of equanimity, delighting in relying on those characteristics, and meditating with the mind without being distracted by those characteristics. Gathering means to fully receive and to promise beneficial activities. "With a mind free from impurities" means to accumulate merit with a completely pure intention. Making offerings of support means that one should observe ordination and full monastic vows, etc. Therefore it is said, "In the manner of an Acharya and Khenpo." Thus, for the time being, speaking from the aspect of fully receiving, one will engage in "various kinds of service and offerings" with a mind free from impurities. Serving the sick

For the sake of honoring and satisfying the minds of those who practice pure conduct, offering alms by means of Dharma, and offering to eliminate the sorrow of the many sufferers who are free from misery, and offering to those who are extremely respectful to the objects of learning or to eliminate the regret of the respectful, and offering to eliminate the afflictions of those who harm practitioners. Small, medium, and large are the three types of harm. To those who have committed these three types of harm, applying severe actions is called punishment. For those who apply severe actions, considering the complete abandonment of the cause of faults, it is said, "What I have," and so on. What is called "What I have" means "one's own." What is called "Guarding all afflictions" means guarding all afflictions, eliminating the ultimate of hatred with the power of discriminating awareness, and with a mind of benefit and a mind of happiness, like a wise doctor treats a patient, or like a loving father treats a son who does what he should not do, solely for the sake of averting from faults, showing severe actions with a mind of love. For those who have become faulty by doing small things, they are encouraged and rebuked. Therefore, those who have committed great misdeeds are rebuked with words of degradation. Expulsion is to drive out from the residence. Furthermore, the various establishments of names should be understood: for small faults, scold; for medium faults, impose punishment; for those who have committed great faults, expel. These three severe actions, because they are motivated by the thought of benefit and happiness, can also bring benefit and happiness to others. To show this, it is said, "What is rebuke among them," and so on. These will show that in the moment of suffering now, it will become happiness. For themselves, it will become a matter of benefit and happiness. For them, through such actions, it is shown that for those who have made mistakes, seeing that it is a mistake, confessing and vowing not to commit it again, and so on.
