It is so. What is called "desiring gain" is seeking an improper livelihood. What is called "the cause of gain" means showing that it is unnecessary. What is called "accomplishment of gain" is the certainty of gain. Meaningless is because it is summarized by nonsense. What is called "generating joy" is rejoicing with the pleasure of the mind of the afflicted, and the hair stands on end. What are called "untrue various qualities" are truly summarized by flattering words that enter through various ways and describe qualities, because they are in accordance with happiness only to this extent and are not constant, so they are for one's own benefit. Thus, even if they cause other beings to truly generate joy, but they do not cause other beings to enter the particularly excellent virtuous aspect, this is called mere flattery. Therefore, those are words of mere self-interest that appear to be for the benefit of others. What is called "serving and honoring, wanting to take as one's own" means that one is dominated by actions and deeds with that thought, and not otherwise. They proclaim it greatly for the sake of the work, make it complete, and give a place to stay, but that is also accumulating an unreasonable collection of dharmas, because there is the saying, "They also take disciples for the sake of the work." That is also, even if it is in accordance with happiness, it is only this much, and it is not constant, so it is only for one's own benefit. Even for those retinues that are completely taken in this way, there is no benefit for oneself. If I liberate beings who have been enslaved by the power of others from slavery with my own power, and then enslave them as my own slaves, that is also merely for my own benefit. Similarly, for beings bound by bonds, freeing them from bonds in order to accomplish one's own benefit, and for beings frightened by the fear of punishment, etc. The word "etc." includes beings frightened by the fear of having no livelihood, freeing them from their own punishment, etc., all of these are merely for one's own benefit, because there is no benefit or complete taking for them. The meaning of "its cause," etc., is also how.

It should be understood reasonably with intelligence. Previously, it was explained that the meditation of the cause of obtaining rebirth, that is the meditation of the cause of abiding, and the practice of entering into equanimity. For those, because there is completely no benefit for sentient beings, it is only for one's own benefit. By giving alms to get close to enjoying other sentient beings, like this, by giving alms to gather, giving like that, it becomes the benefit of both. In the capacity to do so, not retaliating against those who harm others becomes the benefit of both. Apart from those, called "apart from those," for seeking enjoyment for the benefit of others and so on, everything should be understood reasonably. Merely benefiting others, it should be understood as being established in six aspects. With inverted views, using the merit arising from giving to things that should be done; for those who even if their discipline is flawed, have the ability to accomplish, the practice of teaching the Dharma to others; from extreme detachment, the practice of closely practicing the virtuous Dharma belonging to it; in the capacity to retreat from meditation, the practice of manifestly rejoicing in meditation; after gaining freedom, the practice of benefiting sentient beings with various emanations; even if the deeds of the Tathagata are complete, also acting for the benefit of sentient beings. Here, the word "merely" is the main word of meaning. The three words falling into wrong views and so on, the latter explains the former, the view of slandering cause and effect, becomes falling into wrong views. Its antidote, the worldly right view is destroyed, that is the meaning. He does not think that the result of giving will arise, that is not seeing the future. Determining that the result does not exist, that is not seeing the result. Another saying, wrong view is a general indicative word, for giving and its result, relying on the power of others, the practice of not having faith. The opposite of faith, disbelief, near afflictions increase, that is not seeing the future. The result of giving alms by one's own power does not exist, is contrary to right view.
