That which is called "to be done," monks, these four are the four fearlessnesses of the Thus-gone One. With what kind of perfect possession does the Thus-gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, make a vow in the place of the great lion, and even roar the lion's roar? What are the four? If he says, 'I am the Perfectly Awakened One,' then here, whether it be a monk, a Brahmin, a god, a demon, a Brahma, or any other, no cause is seen to refute or remember in accordance with the Dharma, 'This Dharma has not manifested perfect awakening,' and thus he obtains bliss, obtains fearlessness, and abides, this is the first. If he says, 'I have exhausted the defilements,' if another says, 'These defilements are not exhausted,' as before, this is the second. Also, whatever obstacles I have spoken of to the hearers, if they practice them, they will not turn into obstacles, as before, this is the third. Also, whatever path of definite emergence I have spoken of to the hearers, with the definite emergence of the noble ones, it can cause all suffering to cease, if another says, 'This is not a definite emergence,' as before, this is the fourth. The so-called vow in the assembly is spoken of in terms of the perfection of one's own benefit and the benefit of others, because one is fearless, one should make a vow in the assembly, and not make a secret vow, this is the concluding word. It is related to abiding in obtaining bliss because one's self has thoroughly known the state of having truly transcended the state of all sentient beings, and there is no opportunity for others to refute it. The first is not common to the hearers, because they have abandoned the obscuration of knowledge, and because they do not have the ability to know all aspects of knowledge. Thus, in terms of the wisdom that is unobstructed to all objects of knowledge, it is the first. Liberation from the obscuration of afflictions that is common to the hearers is no different from liberation. In terms of one's self having abandoned all afflictions, it is the second. Those who desire liberation, those who enter for that purpose

For them, the third is to closely show the path that transcends the world. According to the order of meaning, it is shown here first, meaning that after showing the path, the obstacles on the path will be shown. Because the dharmas that will become obstacles to inevitable arising are inconsistent, they must be unified, which is precisely the fourth. The latter two are in terms of the path and the collection of obtaining it. By merely showing the dharma of obstacles, it will also be shown. These four positions are such that no one can change them. Because it shows the characteristics contrary to the vow, and the reason without reason, in "the reason also," the first two positions refer to acting perversely from the positions of complete manifest enlightenment and exhaustion of defilements, starting from how to universally enter contrary to the vow. Because all actions of body and so on are preceded by wisdom, reversing from the first position, there is no mind of entering. What the Tathagata has closely shown has no contradiction between the former and the latter, and no contradiction with reason, so the latter positions also enter without contradicting the vow, because the reason has not been truly seen. Monks, Brahmins, etc. do not have the divine eye. Gods and demons have the divine eye. Thus, it is shown that even with the divine eye, one can truly see the perverse entry. Gods and demons know the minds of others. Others besides them do not know the minds of others. Thus, even demons and so on have not seen the reason for refutation. Because the position of the refuter contrary to the position of the vow has not been truly seen, happiness is obtained, fearlessness is obtained, and lack of shame is obtained. Because there is no discouragement in the mind, it is called inevitably obtaining fearlessness. Because of fearlessness, it is called no discouragement in the mind. In order to show the number determined as four, it is shown that it is neither more nor less than these four. In "accomplishing self-benefit" and so on, accomplishing self-benefit is the perfection of wisdom and abandonment. Accomplishing the benefit of others is showing the path and the collection.
