Pa'o. Similarly, for sentient beings, the superior intention to benefit the next world is called the intention to benefit. Poverty means suffering from the lack of necessities. Helplessness means becoming an object of compassion, unable to accomplish necessities, and unable to eliminate suffering by oneself. Without support means having no other support for desires. There are also two kinds of beneficial things: those that are gathered by the happiness of afflictions, and those that are gathered by the happiness of non-afflictions. Among them, what is gathered by the happiness of afflictions is complete ignorance and carelessness, which leads to complete loss from virtuous dharmas, and entering and increasing non-virtuous dharmas. What is gathered by the happiness of non-afflictions is abandoning non-virtuous dharmas, truly taking up virtuous dharmas and making them grow. Therefore, wanting to abandon afflictions and accomplish beneficial things is what it means. To truly increase as in one day means to cultivate the intention of benefit and happiness three times a day and three times a night. To practice, increase, make it grow, make it flourish, proclaim, like this is called truly increasing. By increasing the attention of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings, the superior intention of benefit will increase. By increasing the attention of compassion, the superior intention of happiness will increase. The forbearance of definitely realizing the Dharma is the means of truly thinking about the Dharma, and by individually thinking about the Dharma, making the extremely peaceful Buddha Dharma fully mature. Giving and striving in discipline are also called means. Subduing sentient beings with patience and the four objects of gathering is also the means of superior intention. Therefore, it is said to be the means of accomplishing benefit and happiness, and because it becomes the cause of producing great merit, it is called the door of gathering great Dharma. Having generated the mind of enlightenment in this way, acting with body, speech, and mind in accordance with the perfections such as giving,

The complete dedication to the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment becomes the means for one's own benefit. That itself becomes the cause for perfectly accomplishing the great enlightenment. Those actions that possess the practice of the perfections, which are the means of accomplishment as previously shown, are also done in common with all sentient beings. They are completely dedicated so that all sentient beings may attain their fruit. Therefore, it is the means for the benefit of others. The means that were previously shown, which are encompassed by benefit and happiness, are also done so that sentient beings may enter and be liberated. Therefore, it is said, "For the sake of eliminating all suffering." These two means are also called the two great collections of virtuous qualities, because they are an inexhaustible accumulation of merit. They are also called a collection of virtuous qualities, because they are the very nature of an accumulation of merit. That is, the immeasurable collection of virtuous qualities, beginning with the initial generation of the mind, is proclaimed because the extraordinary cause and the extraordinary result are wondrous and amazing phenomena. Compared to that, in relation to the upholding of the virtue of the continuum of the Hearers and so forth, the accumulation of extraordinary merit becomes the cause of the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment, while the upholding of other virtues does not. This is the extraordinary cause. Its result is the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment itself, and not something else. This is the extraordinary result. Thus, whatever virtuous qualities the Bodhisattva who has generated the mind upholds, that is exceedingly extraordinary by way of both the cause itself and the result itself. The upholding of the virtue of all the Hearers and so forth is also completely nonexistent in all of everything. The generation of such a mind that possesses qualities is truly transcendent of all the worlds, because it is proclaimed as possessing benefits. From the very moment of generating the mind, and so forth, becoming the object of veneration for all sentient beings, and so forth, is all the worl
