That harm may arise to this, etc., following this verse, it should be examined in this way, it should be known. The wisdom of the nature of the mind that must be generated, including the teachings previously shown, is called the power of individual examination. Because of the difference in lineage and the difference in spiritual friends, the desire for great Bodhi arises, and those who are close to faith and forbearance cannot be moved by demons and heretics. Therefore, those who have the power of faith in great Bodhi are not afraid of suffering. It is impossible for oneself to want happiness and to benefit others at the same time. Therefore, those who have great compassion for sentient beings, no matter what kind of suffering they encounter, will become the cause of increasing compassion, not the cause of shrinking back. Such a cause should also be understood by following the praise: If the world is in poverty, I will give up myself. The first two causes are the two powers of stable strength. Similarly, the nature of the powers is established separately, and the abbreviated establishment is that the four powers combined become two powers, namely self-power and other-power. Among them, there are three kinds of self-power: the seed that comes from one life to another has the power to generate power, and has the habit of good roots in other lives, and has the good Dharma of the Dharma of seeing. The so-called "by self-power" refers to the energy belonging to one's own continuum, and the desire, forbearance, and faith that arise autonomously are different names. To generate faith in great Bodhi in one's own unique way is called self-power. The so-called "that which is generated by the power of others" refers to that which is generated by relying on others, that is, the desire, forbearance, and faith that arise from the power of the spiritual friend who is determined to teach, are the same as before. After generating Bodhicitta previously, the action of the cause as shown before, or due to previous habits, or now seeing Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

Is it just that? If merely hearing these virtues can quickly generate Bodhicitta, then what need is there to mention hearing the Dharma of special vows or seeing miraculous powers? Therefore, in the past, deeply entering the Mahayana and being accustomed to virtue is called the 'power of the cause.' In this very life, attending to virtuous friends, listening to the Bodhisattva Pitaka, contemplating, and so forth, becoming accustomed to it for a long time, becoming accustomed to virtuous Dharma is called the 'power of application.' Thus, after explaining the causes for the divisions of Bodhicitta, in order to summarize the previously explained divisions of definite arising and non-definite arising, by means of one of the four conditions, or by a combination, or by means of one of the four causes, or relying on a combination, if that Bodhicitta arises from the combination of these two, the inner power and the power of the cause, or individually, then it will become stable, following the verse 'The river of afflictions is turbulent, and the gates of the lower realms are always open,' in order not to be swayed by unwholesome friends. Becoming the essence is because compassion is weak and does not turn back. Becoming unshakeable is because one is not frightened by suffering and does not waver. Another explanation is that because one is not turned back by the suffering of samsara, it is stable. Because one is not turned back by harming sentient beings, it becomes the essence. Because one is not turned back by the suffering of ascetic practices, it becomes unshakeable. Bodhicitta generated from powers other than these will not be stable. Thus, through the power of causes and conditions, after explaining the divisions of Bodhicitta, namely definite arising and non-definite arising, now, in order to explain the causes of turning back and not turning back, it is said that 'the causes of turning back Bodhicitta are four.' Among them, an unwholesome spiritual friend will cause one to abandon faith in the Mahayana, or cause one to aspire to other vehicles, or cause one to abandon the path to liberation, and cause one to abandon diligence, and in that way, his Bodhicitta will turn back. Because compassion is small, one will become indifferent to sentient beings. In that way, for the benefit of sentient beings
