Regarding the nature of merit, it is said, "arising from discipline," and so on. It should be understood that compassion is firmly explained through four causes. To show that compassion arises in the first sentient beings born in the realm of complete affliction, but not in those without complete affliction, it is said, "If there are also such realms without suffering." Among them, those without complete affliction are of two types: completely pure and not completely pure. Among them, in the completely pure realm, even the names of women, etc., will not be known, let alone birth. Only Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who have attained great power will appear. There, in terms of the nature of the Great Vehicle, the Dharma will be taught. Therefore, the names of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas will not be known either. In those realms, there is nothing contained by the truths of suffering and origin, because they necessarily arise from the extremely pure, transcendent goodness. It is an impure realm, and in those places far from the five degenerations, sentient beings will not decline in all respects. In short, there are three types of suffering: caused by others, co-emergent, and arising from transformation. The opposite of these should be understood as realms without suffering. Wherever there are the five degenerations, the decline of sentient beings, and the three types of suffering, those born there, in short, will generate compassion by observing two types of suffering: that which befalls the continuum of others and that which befalls one's own continuum. For both of these, the cause of compassion will also become two types. Regarding the cause of suffering that befalls the continuum of others, it is said, "Furthermore, whatever suffering it may be," and so on. Among them, "touching" refers to the beginning, "harming" refers to the middle, and "oppressing" refers to the end. Or, co-emergent touches and completely transforms.

It is damaged by what is done by others. Suppressed by others. The second reason is that, being under the control of the suffering that has befallen one's own continuum, one speaks, such as "I too, whatever suffering it may be," and so on. Thus, having shown the two causes of the small forms of suffering that have befallen one's own and others' continua, in order to show the two causes that belong to oneself and others, such as "others or oneself," and so on. If one says "either is fine," that is shown by considering the case of experiencing suffering at the same time. Suffering is shown to be great in four ways, namely, the greatness of time, the multiplicity of doors, the greatness of the state, and the continuous entry. Furthermore, others explain the other causes in four ways, namely, where there is suffering, who suffers, and what is the state of suffering, by closely focusing on these, great compassion will arise. "Where there is suffering" means being born in a world full of suffering. "Who" means oneself and others. "What is the state" means the states of small, medium, and great. There is this fault in this distinction, namely, for small suffering, by distinguishing between oneself and others, two causes are shown, but what is the cause for great suffering? Therefore, the previous distinction is without fault. In order to show that because of these causes, compassion will arise closely from a perfect lineage, it is said, "Relying on one's own lineage." Here, from having a lineage, it will transform into a distinction of courage, and it should be known that from the distinction of courage itself, it will transform into natural goodness. The category of the object itself is called the support. Among these, for the small suffering that has befallen others' continua, it is small compassion. Similarly, when it has befallen one's own continuum, it is medium. When it has become great, having befallen one's own and others' continua, it is great. Following the second distinction, being born in a world full of suffering, it is small. When it has befallen one's own and others' continua, it is medium. These.
