The deteriorating things are the decrease and incompleteness of the limbs and branches. The dregs of afflictions and views are the lack of virtuous Dharma, both for householders and renunciants. The dregs of the eon are the lack of necessities, such as the disappearance of food with a hundred flavors, and thus it deteriorates. To show that sentient beings in the final age have increased tenfold in near afflictions, it is said, "These ten near afflictions are like this." The way to establish the ten near afflictions is that they become obstacles to entering, difficulty in entering, and obstacles to diligence in entering, which is spoken of in terms of the nature of near afflictions. From the commentary, it is said that there are three reasons for entering: becoming the master of wisdom, or because of fear of one's own faults, or because of compassion for sentient beings. The three near afflictions that are contrary to these three are: severe ignorance, severe shamelessness and impudence, and severe jealousy and stinginess. Difficulty in entering, and the two obscurations are three: mentioning severe suffering is the obscuration of ripening. Severe adverse circumstances and severe afflictions are the obscuration of afflictions. Severe misconduct is the obscuration of karma. Alternatively, severe suffering and severe adverse circumstances are the obscuration of ripening. Among them, the evil realms are the obscuration of ripening, because suffering is severe. The obscuration of ripening in the good realms is severe adverse circumstances. Starting from "Severe carelessness, severe laziness, and severe lack of faith will hinder practice," it is attachment to evil deeds, abandoning in the middle, and lack of faith in the means to obtain what is to be obtained. Carelessness is not practicing. Laziness is abandoning halfway even if one starts practicing. Severe lack of faith is not being steadfast in practice. Such an establishment is said to be following the views of other schools. Another way of saying it is this reason:

Hey! The establishment of the ten aspects of afflictive emotions is spoken of in terms of being an obstacle to the path of higher realms, an obstacle to the path of definite goodness, and an obstacle to both paths. Higher realms refer to the perfect self-nature and perfect enjoyment of beings in happy migrations. The path to perfect self-nature is discipline. The path to perfect enjoyment is generosity. If one is deluded by ignorance, one will lose discipline because there is no fear of wrongdoing. Intolerance of others' wealth and excessive attachment to enjoyment will lead to falling away from generosity. Thus, these three afflictive emotions are obstacles to higher realms. The practice of the path of definite goodness should be understood as cultivating the path. Its obstacles are the four afflictive emotions summarized by the three obscurations mentioned earlier. Being obscured by these makes one extremely unqualified. If one becomes reckless, one will become very lazy and therefore will not practice either of those paths. Lack of faith also prevents practice. These ten afflictive emotions cause beings to fall away from the path of higher realms and the path of definite goodness, hence they are called afflictive emotions. They lead entirely to the lower realms and therefore also dwell in decline. Thus, in an age endowed with the five degenerations, even striving for the Hearer Vehicle is extremely difficult to obtain, and striving for the Great Vehicle is even more difficult. What is easily obtained can be done by everyone, while what is difficult to obtain can only be done by some special beings, to show this reason. Taking the difficulty of generating bodhicitta and the difficulty of practicing the Great Vehicle as fundamental, one generates the great bodhicitta. The suffering of samsara is birth and so on. Fear should be understood as twofold: the inferior is that when striving on the Hearer path, when experiencing the suffering of samsara, one is overwhelmed and grieves, weeping.

Do. Utter wails. Beat the chest. Become completely bewildered. The middling ones will be completely dejected. When the middling ones experience the suffering of samsara, they become extremely lazy. They fear and dread practice. The practice of a Bodhisattva is something they cannot even bear to hear, let alone practice. In order to separately show the four aspects of both sufferings. Through the four aspects, special suffering will enter even more intensely. The difference in time is what is called long, because the time will last for a long time. The difference in basis is because it enters through various ways. The difference in category is that it enters as something even greater than great, which is called intense. The difference in continuity is that it connects without interruption or interval, which is called without interruption. Because the brief presentation is expanded by the detailed presentation, the thorough distinction is shown. Lineage perfection, etc., lineage is obtained through Dharma nature, it is not manifested and gathered through cause and condition. Therefore, it is one form, there is no distinction in it. Whatever is obtained through effort is also manifested and gathered through cause and condition, but there is no distinction, because its cause is of the same essence, so there is no distinction in the result either. Therefore, apart from this, there are distinctions in the three causes. The perfect spiritual friend of a Bodhisattva should be understood as four aspects, that is, the perfection of a spiritual friend should be established through the counteractive aspects of the four non-spiritual friends. The bad spiritual friends of a Bodhisattva have four aspects: those of the Hearer Vehicle who enter for their own benefit, those of the Solitary Buddha Vehicle who have little meaning and little activity, those who engage in mantras and various prides that promote worldly prosperity, and those who, by relying on them, will accumulate worldly wealth but not accumulate Dharma. Among them, those who promote worldly prosperity are bad spiritual friends. The counteractive aspect is the first perfect spiritual friend. Good
