To act; one should diminish attachment to one's own actions, and increase attachment to the actions of others. Wisdom and compassion are the causes of diminishing and increasing. Therefore, they are said to be the two roots of enlightenment. As Khyapa said, wisdom and compassion are the main factors in the cause of enlightenment. Then, does the mind of enlightenment arise from wisdom? Or does it arise from compassion? Therefore, regarding "sentient beings who are suffering," etc., if it arises entirely from wisdom, then attaining enlightenment becomes primary, and it does not arise under its control. Therefore, since it arises entirely from compassion, it should be understood that generating the mind is a concordant cause of compassion. A Bodhisattva first generates the firm and unwavering intention to save all sentient beings, and then seeks the path of means to save them, thus seeing no other than the Buddha himself, and generates the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Therefore, saving suffering sentient beings is compassion, and the meaning of this should be understood. Here, the example is given of a mother whose son has fallen into a well. Engaging in generosity, etc., with the generation of the mind, one will obtain the name of paramita. Therefore, relying on and abiding in the generation of the mind, one engages in the dharmas of the path to enlightenment. Those who have generated the mind of enlightenment cause sentient beings to mature as much as they are able, but those who have not generated the mind do not. Therefore, it is said, "Engaging in the benefit of sentient beings," increasing all the Buddha's dharmas, and causing sentient beings to mature, is the training of a Bodhisattva. Therefore, it is the basis of the Bodhisattva's training. Thus, from being the basis, the distinction of the concordant cause is also correctly shown. In order to show that the forms of generating the mind of all are not the same, and in order to fully show the form of generating the mind that possesses such a distinction of qualities.

In order to stabilize. The so-called "definitely arising" means that once the mind is generated, it will definitely arise and will tend towards unsurpassed Bodhi. Because it will be obtained, it is called definitely arising. The opposite of this is non-definitely arising. Constant and inconstant, stable and unstable, non-retrogressing and retrogressing, these are its synonyms. Therefore, it is said, what arises will constantly abide and will not retrogress? With four causes, this mind will regress, namely: the absence of the qualities of lineage, being taken by evil friends, the decline of compassion for sentient beings, and the fear of the suffering of samsara. The four causes opposite to these will not regress. In order to know that the difference in the cause of arising becomes the difference in the generation of the mind, it is said that this generation of the mind is also due to four conditions. If asked how to establish the aspects of conditions, causes, and powers? When the power of lineage is stabilized, it will arise from the first condition. One who possesses the power of lineage, seeing or hearing the miraculous power of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and generating faith in the vast realm, will generate the mind. Being taken by a virtuous friend, and hearing the teachings of the Bodhisattvas, those with sharp faculties will generate the mind. Having obtained the power of compassion that is close to being stable, and possessing the practice of the realization of the Bodhisattvas, becoming autonomous, then the mind will arise. Not fearing the suffering of samsara, and seeing the deteriorating situation of sentient beings, becoming autonomous, thereby obtaining stable power, then the mind will arise. The first two causes are the two powers, and the first two conditions are also the two powers. One who possesses the power of lineage, generating faith in the vast realm, seeing or hearing the great miraculous power of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, becoming autonomous, thereby it will arise. All the direct cognitions of the Bodhisattvas are called miraculous powers because they are profound and vast. Three of them are direct

One is knowing, and three are miracles. The profoundness lies in being inconceivable. The vastness lies in being wondrous. The term "from reliance" means "from what should be relied upon." The term "where they abide" refers to the Tathagatas. The term "entered" refers to the Bodhisattvas. The term "revering the Great Bodhi" means having deep faith in the Great Bodhi. The term "generating the mind" means praising and encouraging that mind in order to attain it, that is, generating the mind through making aspirations and striving. Those who are completely embraced by virtuous friends and who have sharp faculties, upon hearing the meaning of the profound, vast, and exceedingly extensive Sutras, will become exceedingly joyful. Having become exceedingly joyful, they will regard the Dharma they have heard as their master, and thus will have faith in the wisdom of the Tathagatas, and will generate the mind in order to attain the wisdom of the Tathagatas. Having attained a firm power of compassion for sentient beings, at the time when the Dharma is about to decline, they will generate the mind in this way: May the path of the Bodhisattva and the Dharma of the Bodhisattva abide, and for the sake of pacifying the suffering of immeasurable sentient beings and for the sake of truly increasing happiness, they will strive to abandon many sinful and unwholesome dharmas and to increase and expand many virtuous dharmas. Such a principle of the Dharma is about to decline, therefore, I will temporarily practice and generate the mind for the sake of the Dharma abiding for a long time, and I will eliminate the suffering of these sentient beings, and I will generate the mind for the sake of diligently attending to the marked Dharma. The term "the final time, when the end of the age has come" refers to the time of the five degenerations. The evil time, that is, the time of poverty. Possessing the five degenerations, sentient beings will become impoverished in four ways: The degeneration of lifespan is the decline of lifespan, that is, the shortness of lifespan. The degeneration of sentient beings is I...
