Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who guide are extremely difficult to find. Therefore, without pleasing a virtuous friend, one cannot attain enlightenment. Even if one encounters and fully relies on a virtuous friend, but due to clinging to one's own view as superior, learning perversely from the (virtuous friend's) teachings, that is practicing perversely. Corresponding to holding such practice, one holds that all dharmas exist in the nature that children completely conjecture, and also holds that they do not exist in their own essence, thus clinging to non-existence. Even if one does not fall into either extreme, but due to having little interest in the Bodhisattva's training, practice becomes lax and lazy, corresponding to laziness, always doing things perfunctorily, without diligently practicing. In this way, the practice of virtuous dharmas will be weakened for a while, therefore one cannot attain enlightenment. Even if one possesses the three causes mentioned earlier, for beings whose faculties are not yet mature, because they are not vessels, they cannot fully accumulate merit, therefore they cannot attain enlightenment. "For a long time" means that even through practice made familiar for a long time, one has not fully accumulated merit. It should be understood in this way. "If there is no lineage, then all of all, in every way" means that even if there is or is not a cause for attaining enlightenment, one cannot attain enlightenment, because they are fundamentally not vessels. This is the commentary on the first chapter of the Bodhisattva Grounds, the Lineage Chapter, from the Yogācārabhūmi. Depending on such a lineage, one will generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. In order to show that after the basis of lineage, it is necessary to definitely show the basis of generating the mind, therefore, the generation of the mind should first be shown in five ways, in order to show its depth and breadth. Among them, four are vast, and the last one is profound. Because it gathers all other true aspirations besides that, its nature is vast. Aspirations are also of two types: unreal aspirations and real aspirations. Among them, unreal aspirations are the good realms, bad realms, and samsara of oneself and others.

It should be understood that being harmed by the fault of laziness becomes the cause of suffering. There are also three kinds of excellent aspirations: inferior, middling, and superior, corresponding to Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas respectively. Here, it is desired to explain the aspiration of Bodhisattvas. It should be known that the aspiration of Bodhisattvas has various forms in each aspect, that is, manifesting the mind with worldly and transworldly qualities is aspiration, which is a special feature arising from the mind, hence it is called the excellence of thought. Therefore, the mind of enlightenment is also the Great Vehicle, and the characteristic of manifesting the mind with qualities is aspiration. Moreover, it also completely encompasses all the excellent aspirations of Bodhisattvas, because it is the cause of non-regression. Therefore, it should be understood that aspiration is the essence of generating the mind of enlightenment. Manifesting the mind is also related to the object of focus. Because it is related to the object of focus, it is also related to the aspect. Therefore, in order to clearly grasp its aspect and object of focus, it is said, "Thus manifesting the mind," and so on. For the mind-stream of oneself who desires to realize the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, the mind makes this aspiration: for the lineage of those who possess the nature of Nirvāṇa, encompassed by the three vehicles, one also wishes to be the cause and the result. Therefore, may I realize the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, and after becoming a Buddha, may I also benefit all sentient beings. For those of the Śrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha lineages, establishing them in Nirvāṇa also accomplishes benefit. Therefore, it is said to establish them in the ultimate Nirvāṇa. Bodhisattvas should be established in non-abiding Nirvāṇa, therefore it is said to be the wisdom of the Tathāgata. In this way, striving for the benefit of enlightenment and sentient beings is generating the mind of enlightenment, therefore it is established that this is the aspect of striving. Self and others'
