It is said, "One will attain enlightenment," which means entering into the state of truly attaining it, and so on. One should cultivate tranquility and insight through skillful means, and therefore, skillful means are taught thereafter. Otherwise, if one cultivates tranquility and insight without skillful means, one will fall into the fault of directly realizing cessation. There are six non-skillful means for fully maturing the Buddha's teachings. The six aspects of their antidotes are skillful means, namely: having afflicted compassion for sentient beings; observing the faults of samsara; seeing the benefits of attaining nirvana; relying on these two to completely abandon samsara; relying on universal ignorance; and being lazy and not exerting effort. As an antidote to afflicted compassion, it is said, "Contemplating with compassion," and so on. Similarly, one should combine them as appropriate. These skillful means, if summarized, can be divided into three aspects: applying wisdom and means without contradiction; accomplishing samsara and nirvana without contradiction; and applying universal non-affliction and initiating diligence without contradiction. Even if one is universally afflicted, one ignites diligence in order to be free from affliction. A Bodhisattva, while being free from universal affliction, possesses ignited diligence, and this is skillful means. Completely holding immeasurable fruits, and similarly, completely holding immeasurable merit, is spoken with regard to the four types of beings, through the power of four correct practices. Furthermore, there are six types of skillful means: from small objects and pure lands, generating small roots of virtue, through the blessing of special dedication, it will become immeasurable results. This is merely understanding the meaning from the scriptures themselves, namely: through freedom from suffering and discomfort, strife and exhaustion of wealth, correctly accumulating much merit through happiness and contentment, this is completely holding immeasurable merit. Even entering through the gate of afflictions, one becomes weary of practices that lack merit.

Through the unobstructed door, it demonstrates the method of accumulating many merits and so on. Among them, "reversing aspiration" means to remove from the non-expedient path that gives unpleasant results, and introduce it into the correct acceptance and rejection that requires little effort and has great rewards. In this way, even with little effort, one can correctly increase the vast roots of virtue. Also, for sentient beings who engage in meaningless activities through asceticism, it removes aspiration from there and shows the great result of following bliss. Also, for those who desire heaven but have fallen from the path of good rebirth and have entered the gate of unreasonableness and become tired, it shows the path of happiness in both worlds that is in accordance with reason. Also, for those who are completely exhausted by the thought of correct action and especially like meaningless treatises, it introduces them to the vehicle of the Buddha and correctly shows it. Also, by contemplating with the eye of knowledge on the differences in the forms of knowable objects, one can generate vast and immeasurable merit, and thus correctly introduce it. This is as stated in the sutras, such as "Seeing all conditioned phenomena, free from attachment," and so on, up to "This is even more fruitful," which shows the superiority of giving. Also, by contemplating on things that are not grasped as mine and are completely ungrasped, one can also completely gather merit through the door of especially rejoicing in offering to the Three Jewels. Also, through the door of rejoicing in the offerings of the Buddhas of the ten directions, and through the door of practicing the six recollections, and through the door of making offerings with Samantabhadra's offerings, and rejoicing in all the merits of all sentient beings, and through the door of wishing to bear all the unpleasant ripening of all sentient beings with a compassionate heart, and with the thought of wanting to follow the teachings, confessing sins separately in front of all the Buddhas, in order to show the difference in the benefits of confessing sins separately, from all karmic obscurations, dis-
