It is called "Definitive Meaning Sutra for Bodhisattvas," and so on. Although it is of definitive meaning, not everyone attains wisdom, so it is not a valid cognition. How, then, does one obtain valid knowledge? It is said: In "Regarding Realized Wisdom as the Essence," and so on, the knowledge of hearing and thinking is only a slight understanding, so it should be regarded as discriminating consciousness. Because they are objects of scripture, they do not enter into realization. Therefore, it is said: What is to be known by the knowledge cultivated by him, and so on. Such knowledge of hearing and thinking, and whatever sutra that corresponds to the object of cultivated knowledge, will not slander, saying that this was not spoken by the Tathagata. In order to understand the meaning of what has been taught. Thus, bodhisattvas, and so on, divided into four groups of two, will show the four valid cognitions and the four non-valid cognitions. The Tathagatas have spoken of two: meaning and letters. Of these, meaning is valid, but letters are not. The meaning of the teaching is twofold: dharma and person. Of these, dharma is valid, but the person is not, because he completely changes and becomes something else, while dharma is certain as one. Therefore, it is said, reason, and so on, dharma is also twofold, by way of the distinction of definitive meaning, and so on. Of these, the definitive meaning is valid, because it shows a meaning that is certain as one. The meaning that needs to be guided is not, because it can express various meanings. Therefore, it is said, rely, and so on, because the one that is certain has been spoken. From this, three kinds of knowledge will arise: the knowledge of hearing and thinking arising from conceptual thought, and the self-aware wisdom of each individual arising from cultivation, which is not deceptive. Of these, the first is the very one that abides in the form of one's own conceptual thought. Therefore, that which arises from cultivation is valid cognition. A bodhisattva who possesses reliance and accomplishment, because he is without attachment through universally constructed concepts, is necessarily emergent and without error. All dharmas, and so on.

Then, the individual perfect knowledge is the one that thoroughly understands the meaning of all compounded things individually. All the terms refer to all the differences in names. The term "how many there are" means to cut off and say "there are this many." The term "how it is" means to say "it is only like this, not otherwise." Or, it means to know how to ascertain the nature of things such as their own nature and function. The term "unobstructed" means that when one possesses that knowledge and hears the names of all things from others, one is always unobstructed when ascertaining for oneself what the name refers to. When teaching others, it is irresistible. Similarly, one should also understand the characteristics and so on. The term "for all characteristics" means to know that the knowledge of cutting off and saying "these are one's own characteristics, etc." arises. The "purity" of certainty is a definite word, such as saying "form" because of the meaning of being able to become form. In terms of worldly fame, it should be understood in five ways: letters arise and can be reversed, letters are transformed and two others, the meaning of the root word is connected to something very different, these five are called definite words. The term "well distinguished" refers to what can be observed and so on. In short, the individual perfect knowledge and so on are to show that in the teachings of the Sugata, one is skilled in teaching the uncommon places, so it says "with these four dharmas" and so on. Because it is taught based on the dharma taught by the four individual perfect knowledges, it says "one is good at" and so on. It is to show that for teaching all the words and meanings of all dharmas, these four well-distinguished ones are the highest. In order to show that one should train in the accumulation of merit and wisdom in the conventional, it is said, "What is the accumulation of enlightenment?" and so on. In short, there are two types of accumulation: the accumulation of merit and the accumulation of wisdom. The differences between them are the same as before, such as what is said in the chapter on the benefit of oneself and others. Relying on those accumulations and meditating,

Having been made much of and endowed with, Buddhahood is attained through three countless eons. Therefore, these three countless are established in the aspect of small, etc. The conduct of faith is small, because it is devoid of blazing diligence, etc. The consolidated practice is intermediate because it is extremely difficult to tame and unmoving. Abiding in the definite ground is great because it is completely pure. Having perfected all accumulations, it is taught that one should cultivate the factors of enlightenment because one is endowed with accumulating merit. Therefore, the cultivation of the factors of enlightenment is taught. The phrase "relying on the four mindfulnesses" means that the four mindfulnesses thoroughly distinguish all of one's own dharmas in every way by means of understanding, and thoroughly distinguish them by means of accomplishing them for others. Relying on these, one should also thoroughly understand the dharmas of the factors of enlightenment in four ways. The phrase "completely grasped by means" means that it is in accordance with reason and truth, and not that which is unreasonable, that is, by what knowledge one thoroughly knows the factors of enlightenment as they are. What is that? It is by means of not making manifest. Therefore, it is said, "If it is said that these do not make manifest," then that is the knowledge completely grasped by means. Cultivating the factors of enlightenment in the manner of the Hearers' Vehicle is in the manner of two aspects of knowledge. Here, the phrase "in the manner of the Hearers' Vehicle," etc., is that by means of entering into the selflessness of the person, with the aspects of self-character and general character, those are completely known as they truly are in the manner of the Hearers' Vehicle, and the action is taught by the Hearers. By means of entering into the selflessness of phenomena, relying on the ultimate truth, in the aspect of non-duality, the conduct of the Great Vehicle is completely known as it is. The phrase "observing the body" is that because it is well gathered by the wisdom of non-discrimination, by the Middle Way, it is the very wisdom that has completely abandoned the extreme of hair-splitting, that is, the nature and, especially, non-discrimination.
