That is, it means not being controlled by afflictions and abiding. Diligently engaging in virtuous practices, enduring sufferings such as cold without wavering, is called a practitioner who can endure suffering. Belonging to a place means that when dwelling in a secluded place, even if one experiences intense suffering from all the doors of fear and terror that arise in various ways, and from the many fields where they manifest, one does not become afraid and does not turn away from diligence. Showing the cause of steadfastness, such as saying "naturally possessing courage," etc. What is called naturally possessing courage is the power of meditation of those who are free from desire. Generating the power of individual examination is for those who are not free from desire. Furthermore, when three qualities become exceedingly abundant and complete, it is called courage, namely wisdom, compassion, and diligence. Having obtained the greatness of these is called naturally possessing courage, which is steadfastness. What is called various aspects refers to entering through the gates of birth, etc. Thus, even though afflicted by the suffering of samsara, one does not turn away from practice. This, encountering suffering, is the first. The wrong practices that benefit sentient beings are the second. Personally vowing to remain in samsara for the sake of sentient beings is the third. When opponents establish their own positions, and through that, they achieve victory and ultimately refute our position, even then, one does not generate physical or mental disturbance when teaching the Dharma. This steadfastness is the fourth. Vowing to uphold all the inconceivable bodhisattva trainings, and the power of the bodhisattvas, and listening to the profound Dharma solely for their sake, is the fifth. Thus, experiencing suffering, the wrong practices that benefit sentient beings, vowing to endure the suffering of samsara, and even when challenged by opponents, teaching the Dharma within samsara, and the freedom of the bodhisattva's practice and teachings.

Therefore, the place is established. Not being completely discouraged depends on the leisure of the body and the absence of sorrow in the mind, and on firmly beginning practice without turning back. The five causes are established according to the differences in the basis, the differences in practice, and the differences in intention. The difference in the basis is having physical strength, because it is said in the scripture: "Naturally possessing strength." Therefore, from "the body is weak" to "not turning back." There are also three types of practice: the practice of habituation, namely, the practice of reason and the practice of individual examination. First, it is said in the scripture: "Repeatedly habituated," having been habituated for a long time, it becomes its nature, therefore one is attached to it and does not turn back from that state. The difference in the practice of reason, even if seen correctly, one will not turn back. One will not turn back from examining and repeatedly practicing. Intention is the heart of compassion for sentient beings, being grasped by the power of compassion, one will not turn back from the benefit of sentient beings, therefore the compassionate one will not be discouraged. In short, understanding the treatises is established according to being skilled in letters and skilled in meaning. Being skilled in letters means hearing the non-inverted letters, because it is said in the scripture: "Well received from others," because one well receives hearing, therefore it is said in the scripture: "The meaning of the words is well understood." Obtaining the three wisdoms is being skilled in meaning. It arises from hearing the non-inverted meaning, because it is said in the scripture: "Well heard." Because the non-inverted meaning is in accordance with reason, therefore being skilled in thinking and being skilled in examining arises from thinking. Merely holding the heard nouns and sentences is called knowing the Dharma. Hearing and thinking about the meaning is called knowing the meaning, in order to clarify hearing and in order to obtain what has not been obtained, one does not abandon the practice of thinking. Therefore it is said: "One must know more and more."
