The commentary on "Gapa" is completed. The nature of diligence should be established in four aspects. Among them, regarding the aspect itself, it is said that "the mind is delighted." The self-nature of the phenomena arising from the mind should be called aspect. What is diligence? It is to show that the mind is delighted in virtuous actions. So, what is the difference between "the mind is delighted" and "the mind is diligent"? The mind's diligence includes virtue, non-virtue, and neutrality, so it is said from the general aspect. Because that is the nature of the mind completely shaking when the mind is diligent. In addition, "the mind is delighted" is the nature of accomplishing what is desired, because it is held by the true and excellent. Joy is diligence, which is the cause of the virtuous phenomena arising from the mind. Similarly, the appearance of tending towards things is joy, called the appearance of joy. Manifest diligence is merely complete shaking. The object itself, no matter what is said, "collecting immeasurable," is because it is necessary to enter into immeasurable virtuous dharmas and benefit sentient beings. Therefore, it is said, "collecting immeasurable virtuous dharmas," and so on. Regarding the practice itself, "exertion," etc., what is held by respectful practice is called exertion, because it is the aspect of manifest aggregation. Constantly entering without interruption, what is held by continuous practice is uninterrupted. What is held by skillful practice is non-retrogression. As the verse says, "When diligence is practiced properly, there is no difficulty at all." Having a common cause, no matter what is said, "arising from that," in this way, all the virtuous dharmas of body, speech, and mind are motivated by diligence, and it is shown that they are diligent with a joyful mind. The object of the discipline of vows is diligence.

This diligence need not be mentioned, as it is the nature of turning back. Diligence is the nature of joy, therefore it is the nature of entering. The discipline of entering itself is established as joy, therefore it is not the discipline of turning back. Discipline refers to being encompassed by the faultless actions of body, speech, and mind, and is also summarized by the word "complete movement." It is said that householders or renunciate Bodhisattvas diligently practice to perfect the Buddha's teachings and to mature sentient beings. In "two kinds," because it relies on both, it becomes three kinds separately. All diligence can be summarized into two types: armor-like diligence and application diligence. Application diligence is divided into two types by distinguishing the nature of things, and then it is said to be three types, the same as the concise teachings of discipline and so on. Initiating diligence and perfecting diligence are synonyms for these. What is called armor is first discerning and then fully accepting. Therefore, it is said that before application and so on, the armor-like diligence of Bodhisattvas should be understood as being encompassed by the four immeasurables. Therefore, it is praised: Because it is completely held by the four immeasurables, there is no fear. What does this mean? What are the four immeasurables? Immeasurable time refers to hearing that it takes three countless eons to attain Buddhahood, therefore vowing the same and beginning diligence. Immeasurable suffering refers to individually and completely experiencing suffering in those countless lifetimes. Immeasurable merit refers to completely holding the merit that surpasses all Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and worldly beings. Immeasurable sentient beings refers to completely holding the intention to liberate the immeasurable realm of sentient beings from suffering. The meaning of these is

In order to show these sequentially here, if starting from the Buddha himself, even if the need becomes small after effort, and the labor becomes great, even so, the very act of striving to attain Buddhahood itself is shown to be a great armor. To show that the need is small, if it is said that even if one sentient being can be liberated from suffering by such a great endeavor, even then one should strive, what need is there to mention many? And to show the great weariness caused by time and great suffering, if one were to count, like the countless thousands of kalpas of days and nights, countless hundreds of thousands of times, as long as one lives, dwelling in hell, even if I were to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment thereby, even then one should strive for unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, understanding that one should not abandon it midway until it is ultimately accomplished. And if it can be attained with less time and less suffering than that, then one should certainly enter into it. These indicate that even if unsurpassed perfect enlightenment is attained through prolonged and continuous effort, with extremely intense and great suffering, one should not abandon striving for that purpose, which fully clarifies the inconceivable armor. Merely aspiring to such a thing, understanding that all such things are the armor of a Bodhisattva, merely aspiring to such a thing will generate faith in the armor that is similar to it, and that is merely generating faith. That too is steadfast, meaning that it will not turn back and will become firm, because it possesses the seed of turning back and is capable of truly changing. Therefore it is said, if the cause is fully determined, meaning that striving for Bodhi is the meaning of creating the seed. Being fully endowed with that armor is the perfection of the Buddha's Dharma.
