Oh! Therefore, do not be discouraged, and do not despise me, and so on. Thus, the diligence of practice is of five kinds: bravery, steadfastness, firmness, endurance, the heart of beings, fearlessness, and going there having become fearless. Therefore, going into a great assembly, or even liking difficulties is steadfast, so it is said. Arguing with others, or refuting, or for tasks that are difficult for other ordinary people to do, one is also steadfast. Not being discouraged is called steadfastness. For great efforts that have the meaning of having to determine one profound and vast thing, one should not be too discouraged. The practice of meditation and the practice of the four immeasurables, and taking these as the cause of intimacy, one should know that the characteristics of the perfection of meditation are established. Among these, the initial practice of meditation is of five kinds. The initial practitioner is the initial of beginning. What are the five? Single-pointedness of mind, complete solitude, purification of obscurations, contemplation of attention, guarding and increasing vows. In terms of the characteristic of single-pointedness of mind, if one definitely thinks about the meaning of the Dharma, one will not be distracted. If one definitely becomes single-pointed in mind, then one will be able to separately and correctly recognize, and one will also be able to separately and correctly recognize the Dharma. In terms of the characteristic of complete solitude, it is a solitary place, a place in the forest, a remote place, under a tree, an empty house, the nature of solitude. A solitary place is inside the forest. A remote place is the boundary where towns and cities end. What people call solitude is abandoning and not associating with many people, and also not frequenting evil and sinful people. Within the five-limbed, if one sees or hears such a place that is in accordance with correct placement, one will generate joy in making body and mind solitary. One inclines towards it, and generates the mind to go towards it. Therefore, it is said that one should generate great joy in complete solitude. Purification of obscurations
