Therefore, faith should arise. The saying "rely on the meaning, not on the words" means abandoning attachment to the words and keeping the meaning of the scriptures in mind. "Relying" means abiding. The "dark side of the Dharma" refers to what is not included in the Sutra Pitaka, not found in the Vinaya Pitaka, and contrary to the nature of Dharma. The opposite, the "white side of the Dharma," refers to the teachings of the Mahayana. Engaging the mind before entering means starting from the very beginning of entering; this is the initial thought. After entering, one can also attain the distinction of wisdom that reaches the ultimate end of thought. One should repeatedly contemplate what has been thought in order to attain its essence. To explain the benefits and results of abandoning incompatible aspects through the eight modes of thought, one will not become foolish, because one has attained the distinction of wisdom. Because one focuses intently on thinking, the mind will not be distracted. During listening, one will also understand what was not understood before, and what has already been understood will be further understood; this is to show that one can obtain. Therefore, what was unknown when previously heard, and what was not understood when not heard, will be understood and obtained in sequence. Because one seeks through reason, one will not rely on others. Even if one does not like certain profound Dharmas, one should not slander them but should generate more faith. By not slandering, one will not generate much non-virtue. One will also abandon one's own faults, because one has not accumulated the karma of abandoning the Dharma, so one will not be despised or degraded. Because one has the ability to understand the meaning of the scriptures, one can understand meaningful words and will not follow the surface of the words. Being proficient in the dark side of the Dharma and the Mahayana teachings, one cannot be shaken or dissuaded from its true meaning by anyone. Engaging the mind in the Dharma from the beginning will lead to attaining the aspect of great forbearance that was not previously attained. Once attained, one will enter meditation in order to attain the essence and thoroughly understand the meaning. By explaining the practice of Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma, it shows that body, speech, and mind follow the Dharma, as well as thought and meditation; here, thought is explained.

Then, what is meditation? There are four forms of meditation: the thing itself, the action itself, and the complete perfection of the action. The sutra says that two dharmas should be meditated upon, so two things should be meditated upon: the meditation of calm abiding and the meditation of insight. Those actions that are constantly practiced and performed with reverence are the meditation of universally relying and becoming accustomed. Possessing reliance and engaging in much practice is the meditation of accomplishing the complete intention. It can be understood as four meditations: initial, intermediate, and final, or through distinctions of forms such as diminishing. Because complete intention will be accomplished, meditation is most reasonable starting from the ultimate point of intention. Therefore, it is said, 'This is because of being extremely perfect.' The calm abiding and insight meditation of the Bodhisattvas are two very special ones, namely the thing itself and the form itself. In order to explain the difference of things, starting from 'the inexpressible is merely the thing,' etc., with the completely accomplished nature, it transcends the realm of speech. Because it abides in names and discriminations, it is called a thing. The word 'merely' shows the separation from those two. When the thing itself is in a state of not completely pure, it is called nature. The meaning stated is that in the state of complete purity, it is also the object of true wisdom, and both of those are also objects of focus. 'The mind is definitely fixed' means that the mind is diverted from other objects and truly abides in this, that is its meaning. In order to explain the form, it is said, 'Separated from all elaborations,' etc. For that thing, being separated from all distractions is the form of contemplating being separated from all discriminations, that is its meaning. The mind being separated from all distractions shows the separation from all enjoyments.
