Thus it is taught. According to what is appropriate, it is taught according to the distinctions of delighting in concise texts and so on, with differences in faith and understanding. Such fifteen aspects should be understood as consistent speech. In order to teach that one should abandon generating harmful thoughts, anger, and extreme hatred towards beings who cause harm, it is said, "Abiding in loving-kindness." In order to teach that one should dissuade beings who act wrongly from their wrong actions and place them in virtuous actions, it is said, "Abiding in the mind of benefit." Beings are happy, that is, in order to make the heedless abandon heedlessness, one abides in the mind of benefit. For beings who are tormented by suffering, one teaches the Dharma with the desire to eliminate their suffering. Therefore, it is said, "Abiding in the mind of benefit." Benefit and happiness are compassion. Relying on jealousy, one will praise oneself and slander others. In order to teach the antidote to this, it is said, "Being bound by jealousy." In order to teach not relying on gain and respect and having no expectations, and in order to teach the sutra verses of the aspects as taught, it is said, "Those also," and so on. Desiring to distinguish what has been taught, that one should cultivate the practice of Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma that has been taught, one says, "What is the practice of Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma of a Bodhisattva?" Following the Dharma as it has been heard, practicing accordingly with body, speech, and mind, and thinking about and meditating on the meaning as it has been heard, is the practice of Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma. In order to teach that, according to what is appropriate, and in terms of what is meaningful and meaningless, what should be done and what should not be done, the essence of the teachings is permission and strong prohibition, therefore, in the instructions of the Thus-Gone One, the prohibitions and permissions regarding the actions of body, speech, and mind are spoken, saying, "What Dharma did the Blessed One speak?" and so on, permission and non-permission, virtue and non-

To abandon actions that obstruct the path of virtuous deeds, and to rely separately on permitted actions, is to cause the unobtained to be obtained. To completely gather is to make manifest what has been separately obtained. That is what must be relied upon. Alternatively, to obtain again what was previously obtained is to rely separately. To obtain what was previously not separately obtained is to completely gather. One should not be satisfied with merely hearing, but in order to generate the power of certainty in that, initially, to fully contemplate is called practicing the Dharma that accords with the Dharma. To apply the mind through meditation in order to abandon aspects that are inconsistent with the meaning of what has been thought is also to practice the Dharma that accords with the Dharma. Similarly, with regard to the three trainings and the two kinds of wisdom, it should be understood that practicing the Dharma that accords with the Dharma is done through five kinds of Dharma. The term "alone" means without a second. Because there is no second, it is taught to go to a solitary place. The meaning of "having gone to a solitary place" is that if they attain the state of the body dwelling in solitude, then the mind will enter into bliss. How to contemplate by means of applying the mind to the meaning of what has been heard, and to satisfy it without contradicting what came before and after, is to desire to measure. Not contradicting reason is to desire to closely examine. In order to show the possession of eight antidotes to the eight faults, because it is a place of pervasive ignorance and distraction, it should be abandoned, for if one contemplates it, many faults will arise. Those are also shown to be in the place that arises from thought. The term "always being respectful" means constantly without interruption with respect. Therefore it is said: By means of constant action and respectful action, one constantly contemplates. The aspect that is inconsistent with this is called laxity, because of the laxity of the means. In order to negate that, it is said not to be lax. The term "examining" means saying that this and this are reasonable. The term "entering into" means obtaining certainty. Some consider it to be merely faith, the term "not" means thinking that the Thus-Gone One himself is the measure of a person.
