Furthermore, the defilement of contempt is caused by not clinging to existence. The defilement of dejection is caused by despising oneself. What is meant by "time"? It is said, "Following," and so forth. How so? "Reverence," and so forth. As for "showing everything," how so? It means showing everything without interruption. How so? "According to the order of words and letters," and so forth. As for "how to be in accordance with the meaning," and so forth, how does one make it pleasing? By showing what should be shown. How does one make it desirable? By encouraging and arranging what should be laughed at. How does one make it satisfying? By praising what should be praised. How does one make it joyful and without reproach? By making what should be truly joyful truly joyful. How is it wisdom? By direct perception and so forth. How is it fitting? It is in accordance with going to a good destination. How is it unmixed? Even when unmixed, it is not difficult to understand and easy to enter quickly. How is it endowed with Dharma? It is in accordance with the Four Noble Truths. How is samsara as it is? It is suitable for everything. How is it loving-kindness? Even towards those who do harm, and so forth. How is it beneficial intention? Towards those who practice wrongdoing. How is it compassion? Towards those who are happy and those who are suffering, and so forth. How is it not praising oneself and not disparaging others? It is not dwelling in jealousy, and so forth. How is it not dwelling in gain and respect? It is without a greedy mind, and so forth. Whatever things are prohibited for the body and so forth, those should be completely abandoned; whatever things are not allowed for the body and so forth, those should be thoroughly prohibited. Following is as it was previously obtained. "Having gone alone to a solitary place" means having gone to a solitary place. Having abandoned the places that should not be thought of in the beginning, one strives to contemplate the dharmas. What is meant by "contemplation"? How does one see...

Having matured and been fully examined, what is capable of being thought and suitable for being thought is what should be thought. What should not be thought is not thinking, and the opposite of that is not being able to think and not being suitable for thinking. Wherever it may be, all dharmas begin with thinking, which is the meaning of extensive thinking. Thinking with constant reverence, the opposite of constant reverence in action is laxity, and the remedy for that is not being lax. To act, which means following along with what is reasonable and what is not reasonable, and acting accordingly. The so-called dark teachings and the white teachings can also be fully understood as they are. Whatever enters the sutras and appears in the Vinaya, and does not contradict the nature of reality, is the white teaching, and the opposite of that is the dark teaching. The so-called "from the beginning of entering" means entering after thinking without having entered before, which is the beginning of entering. The so-called "will not become foolish" is the thinking that cannot be thought. The so-called "the mind will be distracted" is not thinking about what is not suitable for thinking. The meaning that was not previously understood is comprehended and obtained, or understanding through prior hearing is direct perception, or obtaining what was not previously obtained, so both of these are understood and obtained. Gradually, by this knowledge is fully obtained, etc., it will not be exhausted, that is, it will not be forgotten, and these two themselves are in order. The so-called "not relying on others" means not depending on others. Not speaking and not declining, there is no fault in holding onto the Dharma of the future and the present, and being skilled in it, then one cannot be moved merely because one is skilled in the dark teachings, because one cannot enter the opposite side. Nor can one be moved, because one is skilled in the white teachings. The inability to be turned away from any side means by anyone, by many who have heard, or by those who consider themselves to have great wisdom in the world, or by elders. In any case, it is by scriptures or reasoning. The summarized meaning of the eight modes of thinking is:
