For those who wish to completely avoid harm through generosity, attention should be given to those who have been harmed due to inattention. Just as through hearing and so on, one avoids differences such as high and low status of others, just as eye consciousness does through manifestation. There is no other cause that acts together in the arising of these consciousnesses. Therefore, mentioning "manifestation" is to avoid harm to the body from harms such as high and low status. What is meant by "completely abandoning clinging" is the object that the mind clings to, thereby the mind is completely grasped. Having done so, it is called the mind's clinging. Having cleared away the defilements of miserliness and hoarding, goodness, purity, and suitability, the summarized meaning of these words is what to give and how to give. What to give? Goodness, purity, and suitability. How to give? Goodness mends the body, purity and suitability hold the mind. By clearing away the defilement of miserliness, the benefactor will obtain great rewards in this life and the next. By clearing away the defilement of hoarding, one becomes free from clinging to enjoyments in this life and the next, which is the result of a similar cause. Among these, regarding the detailed classification of material and fearlessness giving, material giving itself is classified and studied here, while fearlessness giving has no classification here. Regarding giving without weariness, starting from this cause, how a Bodhisattva starts from giving as a condition, one should understand as said by beggars and so on. What is meant by "holding as supreme" refers to three different views: the wrong view that this giving has no result, which is the view of holding as supreme; or the view that one can become Dharma through harmful giving; or the view that holding precepts is supreme, believing that one can attain worldly and transmundane purity merely through perfectly complete giving. If someone asks, why accumulate a lot but not give it all at once later, what is the fault? To fully explain this, a Bodhisattva, even though possessing things that can be given...

From there onwards, it should be said that, starting from the fault of hesitation, even though there are things to be given as charity. Hesitation causes the beggar to be turned away for two reasons: either there is no dharma to be given as charity, or the beggar is not begging properly. Just as these two are not present, pointing out the reason for turning away, this itself is revealing two faults. Even though there is dharma to be given as charity, turning away the beggar because of unwillingness to give, and even though those who beg properly have come near, turning away those who beg properly is unreasonable. A Bodhisattva, even though there are objects to be given as charity, cannot tolerate rejecting the beggar who has come near, because seeing that turning away is unreasonable. Furthermore, how does that become hesitation? For the situation where the beggar has not been turned away, there is no hesitation, because later at some time giving, not seeing the merit, therefore starting from not seeing the door of accumulating merit more superior from hesitant giving, it is indicated by "will completely accept having superior merit" etc. The objects to be given as charity are also the same, indicated by "the objects to be given as charity are also the same" etc., even if there are objects to be given as charity, the beggars are also the same, because seeing those who have differences, therefore accumulating and not giving. The Bodhisattva, towards the beggar, indicated by "with a lowly mind" etc., using "with a lowly mind" etc., is to show the destruction of one's own arrogance. The concise meaning of non-reliance giving is not relying on the fame of this life, because that is merely belittling oneself through conceptual thought. Without discouragement is elaborated in the three times. Non-bad giving is giving the best of what one has. Non-back turning giving is giving without distinguishing between friends and enemies, because it has compassion. What is giving without looking at the road? It is not expecting the other person to repay oneself, why? Because it has loving-kindness. The meaning of not expecting help is helping.

This is because seeing that beings who crave happiness and are burned by the fire of desire are helpless. In order to benefit those who act out of desire for happiness, and out of compassion to teach them, it is said, "Because seeing that beings are inherently suffering." Regarding the statement, "Not expecting perfect enjoyment or ripening in the next life," it is to explain the reason, which is "seeing all actions as meaningless." Why is it said that one does not expect the ripening of the fruit of generosity that results in a perfect body? This is to explain the reason, which is "seeing supreme Bodhi as beneficial." Alternatively, it is because seeing both faults, namely seeing all actions as meaningless, and seeing its antidote itself as beneficial. The ninth part of the sequential division of generosity is completed. The sequential division of ethics has been extracted above. The explanation of the Bodhisattva Bhumi Sutra by the teacher Gunaprabha, as much as it transforms, is completed. The Indian Abbot Dipamkara Shrijnana and the translator Bhikshu Tshultrim Gyalwa translated, edited, and finalized it. Commentary on the Bodhisattva Levels, Gunaprabha.
