Even if one condition is not met, consciousness will not arise, this is to explain this principle. The detailed classification of the eye has five types: remaining all, damaged and existing, arising together, arising from karma, and being harmed by internal and external factors. Arising together refers to situations like that of a blind person. Even if form has already appeared, it refers to the form that can be indicated, not very subtle, without contact, without obscuration, with appearance, not very ancient, and the self and lower grounds. Some who possess the divine eye can even see in the dark, and can adjust according to the circumstances. If the attention related to this becomes close, then attention becomes close through five ways: desire, habit, indication by others, memory, and coarse objects. The attention related to this refers to the operation of the mind, because one's own habitual tendencies awaken, the state is not completely lost, and the form has appeared, appearing together with the consciousness of the eye. The mind will produce three states, this is determined from the logic of expression, that is, the consciousness of mind related to the consciousness of the eye arises, which is called arising from "pa," because only the nature of things is close to existence. Therefore, the consciousness of mind also becomes that state, therefore it is considered to arise from being close to existence. It will also be said below that, for the consciousness of mind, there is no effort, but it focuses on scattered and unfamiliar things. When desires and so on do not enter, that consciousness of mind is also said to arise from being close to existence, just as it is said. If someone asks, the consciousness of the eye arises only from desire, then it should be viewed in this way, initially it is the consciousness of the eye, because it is constantly non-discriminating. Initially refers to being produced from being close to existence. Searching refers to the past body seen by the consciousness of the eye, completely searching in a way that makes it appear.

Should be sought. That very appearance, the arising of mind-consciousness that is related to the perception called "blue" and possesses mindfulness, that is called determination. What arises from that proximity is merely focused on the meaning, it is the nature of the image of the object. The seeker is one who is accompanied by conceptual thought about the meaning, and is in accordance with following after the characteristics of the image. Determination is conceptual thought about the meaning, and focuses on its name. The phrase "from the mind of determination onwards" means that it is conceptual thought itself, and possesses its own desire and so on, and immediately causes desire and so on to increase in eye-consciousness and so on, therefore it is indicated by the term "its homogeneous cause." Here, the seeker only arises in the first turning of the wheel, but in the sequence of eye-consciousness and so on that arises after determination, it does not arise in the second turning of the wheel and so on, because the object becomes clear. However, does the seeker necessarily arise in the sequence? Answer: Because it is spoken from the perspective of eye-consciousness and so on that arises in the first turning of the wheel arising from proximity, there is no fault. If co-occurrence is not established, then it appears to be a seeker. If it is established, then it is not, because co-occurrence itself has already made it manifest. Here, although there is no co-occurrence, it is established, and from other places it is said that co-occurrence is with co-arising, and here it is said that the alaya-consciousness is the basis of habitual tendencies, while from other places it is said to be form and so on, is it not contradictory to all the treatises? Answer: The Yogācārabhūmi is profound in four ways, do not abandon it and stay without understanding it. The way to enter is, in the Sutra of the River of Change:

The only way is to explain the uniqueness of the characteristic that is complete and not of hidden intent. As it is said in the *Distinguishing the Provisional and the Definitive*, it is like explaining co-arising and so on. The way of introducing is that some things are slightly introduced into the subtle meaning, such as in this establishment, although the ālaya-vijñāna is mentioned, its object and other distinctions are not made, because its object is subtle and likes to fall into confusion. Similarly, no distinction is made for co-arising. The way of the hidden intent of the sūtras is as follows: all the actions that arise from meditation are loving-kindness, as it is said. In the context of dependent arising, what is consciousness? It is distinguished as the six consciousnesses that enter the womb. Therefore, it is not reasonable to abandon without understanding the intent of the treatises. This is the explanation of the ground with the five aggregates of consciousness. Explanation of the *Yogācārabhūmi*. What is mind? The word "mind" belongs to the synonyms of all consciousnesses. As it is said in the *Distinguishing the Provisional and the Definitive*, all these consciousnesses are also called mind and mind. Here, those who have not understood the five consciousnesses mentioned above should be understood. When is it used as a specific synonym? At that time, it refers only to the immediately preceding and afflicted mind. Alternatively, mind refers to the consciousness that has become a place. There are four types of places: the place of seeds is the ālaya-vijñāna. The place of the beginning of arising is the immediately preceding consciousness. The place of binding to signs is the afflicted mind, as it is also said in the *Distinguishing the Provisional and the Definitive*: the consciousness of mind is also called dwelling in mind, and if mind does not cease, then the consciousnesses will not be liberated from being bound to signs, and if it ceases, then they will be liberated from it. The place of complete contamination and purification is the consciousness of mind, such as attachment and so on, and faith.
