An Explanation of the Treatise on the Grounds of Yoga Practice. An Explanation of the Treatise on the Grounds of Yoga Practice. In Sanskrit: Yoga Caryā Bhūmi Vyākhyā. In Tibetan: An Explanation of the Treatise on the Grounds of Yoga Practice. Homage to Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta, the Lord of Speech! For the benefit of all the world, by the one called Asaṅga, the nectar-like Dharma drawn forth by the power of Samādhi. Poured from the vase of the mouth of the noble Maitreya. Received with the palms of listening, to that one, I pay homage! From the noble Asaṅga, the Sage who became a wish-fulfilling tree, Were born branches of speech, flowers of letters. With rain that adorns the ears, becoming a treasure of wisdom, possessing glory. To his younger brother, the glorious one, I pay homage! Because the three vehicles are all taught, it is of great significance, but because it is not explained in detail, the grounds of yoga practice, which have become different, I will, for the benefit of those of dull minds, collect the drops of liberation from each section. Therefore, this teaching is composed for two purposes: to generate expertise in the three vehicles of the Bodhisattva, and so that those of the lineage of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas may also learn this and, through their own vehicle, certainly attain liberation. Again, for two purposes: to distinguish the deteriorated teachings of the Buddha, and to expand what has not deteriorated. Again, for two purposes: there are also beings who doubt the Great Vehicle, do not understand it, or have not entered it due to being reversed. By showing them the unmistaken characteristics of the Dharma, they will be made to understand with certainty, their doubts will be cut off, and they will be completely comprehended; and for some who have already entered, but are confused when listening to the Sutras with various intentions, they will also be helped. Again, for two purposes: to abandon all childish views so that those who cling to the literal meaning of the Sutras of provisional meaning, by following the characteristics, may enter the hidden meaning of the Sutras; and to abandon the views of those who are frightened by emptiness itself. Again, for two purposes: to benefit those who like brevity, the Sutras

From the scriptures, one should collect the detailed explanations of the characteristics, and in order to benefit those who like detailed explanations, in order to proclaim the Dharma, and in order to show the aspects of the infinite differences of the Dharma. Those thoughts and so on, whether they are the sutras or what is proclaimed from them, should be combined with "What is the Yoga Practice Ground?" For example, in the sutra called "Showing the Yoga Practice Ground," it is also proclaimed that "One should repeatedly learn in the Yoga Practice Ground," and so on. Similarly, in the "Arya Manjushri's Inquiry Sutra," it is also said, "Truly entering is the Yoga Practice Ground." In the "Arya Moonlight Samadhi Sutra," it is also said, "What is the Yoga Practice Ground? It is the place for practicing the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment." In the "Brahma's Inquiry Great Sutra," it is also said, "World Honored One, truly entering the Yoga Practice Ground does not cause any Dharma to arise or cease." And so on. Or, the treatise writer, in order to explain that the other five dharmas that transform into the body of the treatise are established in the mind, and in order to explain that the disciples who hear the treatise are able to correctly discern and answer these questions, therefore said, "What is the Yoga Practice Ground?" Among them, the five bases are pure, namely the Yoga Practice Ground, the base that encompasses the three baskets, the base for explaining these, and the base for being proficient in terminology. If it were not so, then the question of "What has not been explained before?" would not arise. Among them, yoga refers to the path of uniting calm abiding and insight, as it is said in the "Sutra on Distinguishing the Six Sense Bases," "Its calm abiding and insight are equally united." And so on. Or, samadhi is called yoga, as it is said in the sutra, "From the ground of equanimity, correct effort and mindfulness are the cause of gathering in accordance with yoga attention." And so on. Or, faith, desire, means, and diligence are called yoga, that is,
